Jennifer Lawrence's 'Red Sparrow' gets a haunting and beautiful teaser trailer

If you listen to many pundits around Hollywood, they'll tell you that the movie star is dead. There is no such thing as a "bankable" star in a cinematic landscape where brands and intellectual property are more important than the people on screen. And for the most part, yes, this theory is correct. Last week, an R-rated movie about a killer clown with no recognizable superstars debuted to $123 million. The rules of Hollywood are being re-written, and things are changing at an even faster rate than one might imagine. But when it comes to the idea of the movie star's fading importance, I would argue that there are a few noticeable outliers, one of the main exceptions being Jennifer Lawrence. After rising to fame with The Hunger Games and X-Men franchises, Lawrence has experimented with other genres to great success. She had a trifecta of hits with David O. Russell, including Joy, which was sold entirely on her persona. And along with Chris Pratt, she elevated Passengers from a poorly reviewed space film to a global hit. We'll see how mother! does this weekend, but next year, Lawrence will take on the spy genre with Red Sparrow. Earlier today, Fox released the first trailer to coincide with the release of the aforementioned Darren Aronofsky film- watch it below!

It's easy to make a surface level comparison to Charlize Theron's Atomic Blonde here, but in a world where Bond, Bourne, Eggsy, and Ethan Hunt can co-exist, who says we can't have multiple hard-hitting female spies? Reuniting Lawrence with Catching Fire and Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence (no relation), Red Sparrow could be quite the ride. I had heard rumblings about how great this film looked for a while now, but I must say that I was enormously impressed by this highly effective teaser trailer. There's an icy, almost Fincher-esque quality to this teaser, and the violence looks about as visceral and stylish as you can get. For all of the talk of her box office might, it can't be overlooked that Lawrence is a genuinely great actress, and I can't wait to see her go back into the action realm. And plus, the cast surrounding her is wonderful- Joel Edgerton is terrific in just about anything, Jeremy Irons and Charlotte Rampling are legends, and Matthias Schoenaerts is very good as well. Red Sparrow looks like the kind of brutal adventure that I'll enjoy, and this teaser really surprised me. It's blunt and haunting, rich with images that stick in your brain and a simple premise that sounds engaging. I can't wait to see more.

Red Sparrow will be released on March 2, 2018.
