Hey, remember when we thought that Suicide Squad was going to save the DC Cinematic Universe?
Good times.
After many fans were brutally disappointed by the bloated mess of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (I initially liked it quite a bit, but I recognize its massive flaws), everyone in the film industry turned their hopes to Suicide Squad. David Ayer's supervillain extravaganza released one of the greatest trailers in recent memory in January of last year, setting a beautiful string of visuals to the classic power of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." They followed that up with another full-length trailer set to the classic rock song "Ballroom Blitz," which only increased fan anticipation. Suicide Squad was my most anticipated film of summer 2016- simply put, I could not have been any more pumped to see what I thought would certainly be the first great DC film. Rumors of reshoots were concerning, but I brushed it off as a normal process for a blockbuster of its size. Sadly, I was mistaken. Not only was Suicide Squad a crushing letdown- it was simply one of the worst films of the year.
And yet, it still made $745.6 million at the box office, ensuring that we'll see another adventure with Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and the Joker in the near future. David Ayer will be re-teaming with Margot Robbie for Gotham City Sirens, but that leaves a directorial opening for Suicide Squad 2. However, if The Hollywood Reporter is to be believed, that job may not stay open for long. Yesterday, the trade magazine reported that Mel Gibson, the controversial, Oscar-nominated director of Braveheart and Hacksaw Ridge, is being targeted by Warner Bros. to direct the sequel, and that the two parties are in early talks. Gibson was put in Hollywood prison for years after his series of arrests and his deeply offensive anti-Semitic and racist comments, but after being nominated for an Oscar this year for his vicious war flick, his career is being rejuvenated. According to THR, no offer is on the table (Life director Daniel Espinosa is also being considered), but early discussions are underway.
This will undoubtedly be an unpopular move in some circles. I already saw many denounce the film yesterday in the case that Warner Bros. hires Gibson to direct the sequel. However, with Hacksaw, Blood Father, and the upcoming Daddy's Home 2, it's clear that Gibson is enough of a draw for producers to overlook his horrific comments. But I'm not sure if I like the idea of him getting involved with the DC Cinematic Universe. Sure, he's an immensely talented filmmaker, and I have no problem overlooking his personal flaws to enjoy his art. But Gibson is a director with a clear and specific vision, and right now, the DCCU is a black hole. Suicide Squad was butchered by WB in post, because let's not forget: David Ayer is a damn good director as well. Unless WB gives Gibson free reign over this project, thus allowing him to make a bloody bonanza of cinematic carnage, then I'm not particularly interested. With the hit status of Deadpool and John Wick: Chapter Two (as well as the probable success of Logan), the studio really should not be afraid to make an R-rated movie about a group of supervillains. After all, the DCCU is completely inconsistent anyways. What's the harm at this point? But if Warner is looking for another cookie-cutter Marvel rip-off, Gibson is not the man for the job.
