When it comes to classic horror, there are only a few films where the iconic status matches the actual quality of the movie. Seriously- have you seen the original Friday the 13th recently? It's terrible. Like, genuinely awful. However, the same cannot be said for John Carpenter's Halloween, which remains one of the most terrifying, incredible pieces of horror cinema ever put to film. The 1978 film is a landmark of the genre, one that announced the talent of one of the world's foremost horror maestros and created a true slasher icon in Michael Myers. The original Halloween is so pitch-perfect in every single way that following it up with a successful sequel or remake has been nearly impossible. None of the sequels are very good, and despite the box office success, Rob Zombie's brutal, vicious remakes didn't receive much praise from fans or critics. Nobody has touched the franchise since 2009's Halloween II, but last year, reports began to swirl that Carpenter and superstar producer Jason Blum were considering a new take on the series. Yesterday, those rumors came to fruition with an enticing combination that fans will undoubtedly be excited for.
On his Facebook page, Carpenter announced that a remake of Halloween is coming, and this time, the character of Michael Myers will be in the hands of David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. Here was Carpenter's full statement on the news:
"So you say you want a Revolution?
You want to shake things up and bring back Halloween and make it rock again?
Well so do I.
So here's the announcement you've all been waiting for.
David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are joining the project to complete the creative team. David and Danny will write the script together and David will direct. I will continue in my executive producer role to consult and offer my advice and feedback as needed.
David and Danny both came to my office recently with Jason Blum and shared their vision for the new movie and.....WOW. They get it. I think you're gonna dig it. They blew me away.
I might even do the music. Maybe. It could be kind of cool.
And you'll get to see it in theaters on October 19, 2018."
If Carpenter is down, I'm down. A remake of Halloween seems like a bad idea, but when you put talented people like Gordon Green, McBride, and Blum on the creative team, then you have quite the enticing proposition. Gordon Green has an eclectic mix of titles in his filmography, from dark comedies like Pineapple Express to dramas like Our Brand is Crisis. His next film is Stronger, the story of a Boston bombing survivor. Here is the statement from Gordon Green:
"John Carpenter's 'Halloween' was a monumental horror film experience for me and millions of film fans. It's an honor to be working with this creative team to carve a new path in the tale of Michael Myers."
To round out the series of statements, McBride had this to say:
"David and I are thrilled to step outside of our comedic collaborations and dive into a dark and vicious horror. Nobody will be laughing."
This seems like a bizarre pairing, but I can't wait to see their take on this, especially if Carpenter ends up doing the music. I'm sure we'll hear more about this film in the future, but for now, I think it's safe to say that this is one of the most anticipated horror flicks of the next few years. I'm ready for another great Halloween film. All will be revealed on October 19, 2018.
