It's not often that I consider myself to be a fan of a particular studio, but A24 is good enough and consistent enough to buck that trend. How good have these guys been over the last few years? After breaking into the distribution market in 2013 with The Spectacular Now and Spring Breakers, A24 quickly established themselves as a truly original studio, a home for bold new voices in the world of genre cinema. Ex Machina, Mississippi Grind, the Oscar-nominated Room, and The End of the Tour made it a great 2015 for the studio, but 2016 was by far their best year yet. Spectacular genre releases like Green Room and Swiss Army Man made plenty of waves, art house hits like The Lobster and The Witch raked in the box office dollars, and it all culminated with the release of Moonlight, the studio's first in-house production and a genuine cinematic phenomenon.
If the current release schedule for 2017 is any indication, A24 won't be slowing down anytime soon. They'll kick off the year with Ben Wheatley's terrific Free Fire, which has the potential to be the studio's biggest hit yet. After that, films like The Lovers, John Cameron Mitchell's How To Talk To Girls At Parties, David Lowery's A Ghost Story, and the Chance the Rapper-led Slice will hit theaters across the country, likely sparking plenty of buzz from film lovers. However, even with all of those great-looking films, one of the more interesting A24 releases of the year will definitely be Trey Edward Shults' It Comes At Night, which is his follow-up to the acclaimed Krisha. I missed Shults' Krisha when it was released in theaters, which was definitely a mistake in retrospect. The film was hailed as one of the most impressive directorial debuts in recent memory, and after watching this trailer for It Comes At Night, it's abundantly clear that Shults is a director of immense talent. This is a creepy, thoroughly unnerving trailer, and I can't say enough positive things about how this tease plays out. It gives us a good idea of the tone and horrifying ambiguity of this project without divulging many plot details, which is all that a great trailer can do these days. In addition, the opening tracking shot is quite possibly the most chilling thing I've seen in a long time, a deep dive into darkness that seems to never end. The small cast, haunting vibe, and minimalist format seems to be a perfect horror combination, and I can't wait to see it for myself. With a cast led by Joel Edgerton, Riley Keough, Carmen Ejogo, Christopher Abbott, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Griffin Robert Faulkner, It Comes At Night will hit theaters on August 25, 2017.
