There will be six new superhero movies debuting in theaters in 2017 (seven, if you count The LEGO Batman Movie), and after a mixed bag of films last year, nobody quite knows what to expect. Will DC finally get things on track with Wonder Woman and Justice League? Will Marvel offer us anything new with Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok? Is Spider-Man: Homecoming destined to be the best stand-alone Spidey film since 2004? All of these questions will be answered shortly, and I'm going to maintain my state of optimism about the 2017 slate. But of all the heroic flicks coming down the pipeline this year, there's no doubt that my excitement levels are at their highest for Logan. After the success of Deadpool, the raunchy, violent, potential Best Picture nominee, Fox and director James Mangold got the boost they needed to make an R-rated Wolverine movie. As someone who wasn't necessarily a fan of the last two Wolverine flicks, this piqued my interest, but didn't raise my anticipation levels. But when Fox revealed the trailer for Logan a few months back, the film immediately shot to the top of my must-see list. After that moody, evocative glimpse, fans have been waiting with breathless anticipation for another look at Hugh Jackman's final film as Wolverine. And yesterday, after weeks of teases from Mangold and Jackman, the trailer finally premiered. Check it out below!
This is definitely a much less dour trailer, but it still manages to adequately convey the emotional gravity and intensity of this R-rated outing. I'm adoring the western vibe on display, highlighted by Mangold's direction and the lush cinematography from John Mathieson. In addition, the connection between Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Dafne Keen's X-23 seems strong and resonant, which is something that always works in the favor of these big-budget action movies. And while this trailer certainly ups the ante on the action and the brutality, I love that this is going to be a personal, small-scale movie. After seeing Jackman work with Logan for over 16 years, it's going to be bittersweet and moving to see such a painful film centered around the character. And that's precisely why I'm so excited. There's really nothing left to say here- I'm in all the way. Logan opens March 3, and that day can't come soon enough.
