Ladies and gentlemen, we have a title.
The eight chapter in the saga of the Skywalker family will officially be called:
Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
This announcement was made earlier today by Lucasfilm, who confirmed the title of Rian Johnson's film after months of rabid speculation from fans. While there was a very prolonged and effective marketing machine for 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this is really the only bit of concrete information we've received about Episode VIII beyond some basic casting information. This is mostly due to the presence of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was the focus of Disney and Lucasfilm throughout the year of 2016. But with the theatrical run of Rogue One finally winding down, it's time to get the wheels turning on the next chapter in the franchise. I'm firmly expecting a plot synopsis to come down the pipeline in the next few weeks, all before a full teaser trailer at April's Star Wars Celebration.
As for the title/teaser poster, I love it. The Last Jedi is a perfect title, giving us a hint at the direction of the story, but also remaining fairly ambiguous (fans are already debating whether it's the singular or plural version of "Jedi"). I also love the striking red font on the logo, which firmly indicates that Episode VIII is going to be a much darker journey. If we're being honest though, Lucasfilm could have waited to announce the title until I saw the film in theaters and I still would be there opening night. They sold me with "Star Wars." Nonetheless, this is a good way to get fans excited for what will surely be another amazing year for the franchise.
