'Moonlight' breakout star Trevante Rhodes joins the cast of Shane Black's 'The Predator'

It was a pretty good year for Shane Black. The writer/director returned to the big screen with The Nice Guys, which was one of the most beloved films of the year, even though it didn't make a whole lot of money at the box office. The Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe-led buddy comedy scored well with critics and audience members (I don't know anyone who didn't like it), and as I said on my Top 25 list, I have a feeling that it will be an enduring cult classic. While I wanted a franchise for the pair of "Private Dicks" in 1970s Los Angeles, the money just won't be there. Thankfully, Black is still finding plenty of opportunities in the big-budget game. He'll be tackling Fox's reboot of Predator next, with a film entitled The Predator. Oddly enough, Black played Hawkins in the original film, so seeing him return to the franchise in a different capacity will undoubtedly be a treat for fans. Narcos star Boyd Holbrook and Olivia Munn have already joined the cast of the film, which is hitting theaters on February 9, 2018.

It was also a pretty good year for Trevante Rhodes. The young actor snagged the role of a lifetime in Barry Jenkins' Moonlight, and he absolutely crushes it in the devastating third act. With a breakout role in one of the biggest indie hits of the year, Rhodes is now getting the chance to move on to bigger and better things. Earlier today, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Rhodes has joined the cast of The Predator in an unspecified role. Very little is known about the film beyond its suburban setting, but the combination of filmmaker and material is enough to get most fans excited. Rhodes is a real breakout star, and he's an excellent addition to the cast. Much deserved acclaim has been given to the performances in Moonlight, but I feel like Rhodes hasn't gotten enough attention. He's a genuine revelation in the film, bringing such pain and pathos to the character of Black. He's a super nice guy (I met him extremely briefly in Toronto), and I have a feeling that he's going to be a real star in Hollywood. This is only another step forward for a really promising actor.

The Predator opens on February 9, 2018.
