August is shaping up to be a pretty great month on its own, but in a way, it feels like the appetizer for what's to come. On August 31, the fall movie season officially begins, and it is starting to look like something really special. September itself is full of interesting films, such as Derek Cianfrance's The Light Between Oceans, Clint Eastwood's Sully, Oliver Stone's Snowden, and Peter Berg's Deepwater Horizon. From there, things only get more impressive. The centerpiece of all of this madness is the Toronto International Film Festival, which has unveiled a stellar lineup and added to it week after week. In the past three days alone, the TIFF programmers have added fascinating films such as Ben Wheatley's much-anticipated Free Fire, Pablo Larrain's Jackie, Paul Schrader's Dog Eat Dog, and Adam Wingard's Blair Witch. But another recently announced film in the TIFF lineup has caught the eye of the industry and emerged as one of the must-see films of the festival- Barry Jenkins' Moonlight. The tale of a young boy's path to adulthood in Miami during the war on drugs promises to be an epic and heartfelt story, and it'll be playing as part of the Platform section at TIFF and at the New York Film Festival. Moonlight is a film that only popped onto my radar this week, but after watching this trailer and hearing the insane buzz surrounding the latest film from Barry Jenkins, it's undoubtedly one of my most anticipated of the festival season. It's hard to even put into words how good this looks. A24's Twitter account describes it as a "film about the moments that define us, the people that shape us & the ache of love that can last a lifetime," which seems like the best way to sum up the emotional experience that this trailer provides. While it seems to take a couple of cues from other films, this looks like an ambitious and entirely original creation, something like we've never really seen before. Over at Hollywood Elsewhere, awards writer Jeffrey Wells mentions that he's talked to someone who has seen the film and they described it as "Boyz in the Hood meets Boyhood meets Brokeback Mountain." If that doesn't sound like an appealing combination, I don't know what will. In conclusion, Moonlight looks absolutely devastating and I'm really hoping that I get the chance to catch it at TIFF.
But if not, the film, which stars Trevante Rhodes, Kevin Holland, Mahershala Ali, Naomi Harris, and Janelle Monae, will hit theaters on October 21.
