Of all the movies hitting theaters this summer, no movie has faced more animosity and backlash from fans than Terminator: Genisys. The fifth installment in the beloved Terminator franchise seemed to have a lot going for it at first- Arnold Schwarzanegger was returning to star in his most iconic role, Paramount was planning a major trilogy and the early word seemed promising. But then the full cast list was revealed, and immediately, people were a little more worried. The casting of Emilia Clarke and Jason Clarke was met with mostly indifference, but fans were definitely not happy about Jai Courntney playing Kyle Reese. Things only get worse after a laughable series of Entertainment Weekly cover photos and some plot details that really baffled fans.
In December, the first trailer was revealed, giving fans an incredibly vague look at what was to come. Many seemed to be confused by the film's plot, and expressed their dismay at the new timeline and some of the visual choices made by the filmmakers. The second trailer for the film, released earlier this year, was steeped in even more controversy. Most of that fan chatter surrounded over the reveal of what seems like a pretty massive spoiler- that in Terminator: Genisys, John Connor is some kind of Terminator hybrid, a new being created by Skynet. Many threw their hands up in the air, believing that Paramount had spoiled the film in a desperate attempt to get people to the theater. Others, like me, thought that it was an interesting reveal and one that could gain more depth in the theater. Since the beginning, I've maintained my excitement for Terminator: Genisys, and if the movie ends up being good, I'll be the first one to brag about it. For some reason, I'm confident that Paramount and the cast and crew behind Genisys know what they're doing. Here are a few reasons why I believe that Terminator: Genisys will not suck.
-The trailers haven't revealed much
Okay, so I know that a few of you are gonna fight me on this one. The John Connor reveal, on the surface, seems like a pretty massive spoiler. And it might have been something better left for the movie theaters. But at the same time, Paramount needs to sell this movie, and pitching it as another cool Terminator sequel, only with Arnold this time, was not working. So they had to pull out one of their surprises. It happens. Life will move on.
Yet beyond that, I still couldn't tell you a lick about what the plot of Genisys is. I know that Kyle Reese gets sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor, yet she's already being guarded by a Terminator. And then a John Connor Terminator hybrid factors into the mix somehow. Oh, and Byung-hun Lee plays the T-1000. And they're trying to stop judgement day. Let's be honest here, that's all we really know.
The marketing hasn't been great. It has pitched a film that seems to be a tad redundant, as well as incredibly convoluted and wild. But the film's secrets aren't out yet. What is Genisys? Who is Matt Smith playing? How did this new timeline begin? How did John Connor become a Terminator? Does any of this actually make sense? These are the questions that I've been asking and the marketing has revealed none of this. That's a good sign to me.
-It received the James Cameron seal of approval
Once again, this might be a bit of a stretch for some people. James Cameron recently said that if you liked the first two Terminator movies, you would love Genisys. That's certainly a bold statement and it gains a little bit of weight considering that it comes from the man who made the first two films, unquestionably the best in the series. Now, it's true that Cameron could be getting paid a significant amount of money to put out the good word for Genisys. But I just don't think that's the case. Arnold has previously bashed Terminator: Salvation and I don't believe that any of these guys want their name on a less-than-stellar product.
-The visuals look astounding and the movie just looks fun
Terminator: Genisys will not be as good as The Terminator. It will not be as good as T2: Judgement Day. Those movies are action classics and it would be hard for another Terminator movie to ever find a way to be better. But that doesn't mean that new Terminator movies can't be entertaining. Salvation failed on every level, yet there's so much fun to be had with this franchise. The trailers for Genisys have promised awesome visuals and sleek action scenes. Essentially, it looks like a fun summer blockbuster.
Ultimately, as long as the story is somewhat cohesive and the action sequences are good, I'm in the bag for this one. Genisys appears to be an interesting twist on the classic franchise and despite a lot of fan nervousness, I still believe that this will be a fun film. Arnold is back, we're back in Los Angeles again, and the visual effects look good. I'm not expecting a masterpiece from Terminator: Genisys, but I do think that it will be a fun film. Hopefully I end up being right.
