After the summer got off to a stellar start with Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road, the box office has been in a bit of a slump since Memorial Day weekend. Tomorrowland and Aloha both flopped, and the success of San Andreas has only carried the weight of the box office so far. If you had asked me earlier, I would have said that this weekend would be the one to breathe new life into the box office. With three diverse new releases and a couple of strong holdovers, most prognosticators figured that the June upswing would begin. However, that was unfortunately not the case.
Spy led the box office with a paltry $30 million and a "B+" Cinemascore. That's not a terrible opening for the $65 million comedy, but I was certainly expecting more. Spy's opening was stronger than that of Tammy and Bridesmaids, yet lower than The Heat and the much-derided Identity Thief. With a multitude of word of mouth screenings and incredible reviews (a stunning 95% on Rotten Tomatoes), it's still a mystery as to why this film didn't do better at the box office. Many have speculated that Fox struggled with the marketing for the film, pitching it as another standard Melissa McCarthy vehicle and not the dynamite action comedy that it truly was. Hopefully this film will do well in the coming weeks, because it's truly one of the best studio comedies in recent memory.
In second place was San Andreas, which grossed $26.4 million. The Dwayne Johnson disaster movie smash has now grossed $92.1 million, a solid total considering the film's $100 million budget. Insidious Chapter 3 also had a pretty solid weekend, finishing in third place with $23 million and a "B+" Cinemascore. That's much lower than Chapter 2, but not bad considering that Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and James Wan were all not directly involved with this film (Wan was a producer, but Leigh Whannell directed the film). With a solid Cinemascore, I would expect Insidious Chapter 3 to finish around $50 million.
Entourage was the biggest disappointment of the weekend, finishing in fourth place with $10.4 million. The Hollywood comedy got off to a fast start on Wednesday, but ultimately, Entourage proved to be incredibly front-loaded. Some fans of the film are holding out hope that the solid "A-" Cinemascore will carry the film in the following weeks, but it's not likely. The budget couldn't have been too high, so there's still a chance of another sequel, but this isn't a strong result for the film.
Mad Max: Fury Road continued its strong run this weekend, with $7.9 million in fifth place. The film has now grossed $130.8 million in the US and topped $300 million worldwide this weekend. Not bad considering all of the obstacles that this film overcame, but there's still work to be done. Pitch Perfect 2 was just behind in sixth place with $7.7 million, raising its total to $160.9 million. Truly incredible and I can't imagine that Pitch Perfect 3 is far behind.
In seventh place was Disney's Tomorrowland, which continued its mediocre run with $7 million. The film has made a mere $76.2 million in the US and will go down as one of the biggest flops of the year. But Disney will survive, because Avengers: Age of Ultron has killed it at the box office. The film grossed $6.2 million in eighth place this weekend, enough to raise its total to $438 million. Age of Ultron passed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2 on the worldwide charts this weekend and is now headed for The Avengers and Furious 7.
Aloha plummeted 66% to ninth place, which is an absolutely horrific drop. The Cameron Crowe flop has now made $16.3 million, and will probably go down as one of the year's biggest failures. To round out the top ten, Poltergeist snagged another $2.8 million to raise its total to $44.4 million. One final note- Love and Mercy, the Brian Wilson biopic, grossed $2.2 million in 483 theaters, a solid result. Look for a big expansion for this one soon.
Next weekend will finally unleash Jurassic World upon the world. Here are my predictions:
