Even at the ripe age of 85 years old, Clint Eastwood is still churning out films faster than most directors half his age. Last year alone, Eastwood directed Jersey Boys and American Sniper. The former was a pretty mediocre effort that didn't do much critically or a the box office, but the latter was a bona fide cultural phenomenon. American Sniper was the highest grossing film of 2014, and was nominated for six Oscars, winning one. Eastwood doesn't act in films much anymore, but his directorial career is still going strong. Coming off the spectacular success of his Chris Kyle biopic, Eastwood is now set to tackle the story of Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the heroic pilot who saved the lives of hundreds when he made a daring crash landing into the Hudson River.
At The Hollywood Reporter, the trade confirms that Eastwood is set to direct Sully for Warner Bros. "Simply put, Clint Eastwood is at the top of his game, not to mention a global treasure. On the heels of his extraordinary work on American Sniper, it is tremendously exciting to see him explore the life of another captivating true life hero," said Warner Bros. President of Creative Development Greg Silverman. THR also revealed that with Eastwood signing onto this project, he is now out of the running for the Richard Jewell biopic that is set to star Jonah Hill. Sully Sullenberger is one of the few true heroes in American culture, with no controversy, moral questions or other problems. Unlike the absurdly pervasive drama that followed American Sniper, Sully should be a decidedly less topical project. I'm expecting to see this one in either late 2015 or late 2016, whenever Warner Bros. can best make an Oscar run.
