So Paul Feig is really flipping the Ghostbusters franchise on its head, huh?
After the bold and exciting move of casting five very funny women (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Cecily Strong) to star in the Ghostbusters reboot, director Paul Feig is making another incredibly interesting move. On Twitter tonight, Feig announced that Chris Hemsworth, the blockbuster star best known for playing Thor in The Avengers, will star as the Receptionist in this new edition of Ghostbusters. In the original film, the Receptionist is a sorta droll and annoying old lady who basically gives the Ghostbusters a report whenever there's a job that needs to be done. And with this new direction for Ghostbusters, I can't think of anyone better than Hemsworth to play this part.
Despite being best known for his action hero roles in Marvel films, it's clear that Chris Hemsworth really wants to break away from that image. He did a phenomenal job in Ron Howard's Rush back in 2013 and teamed up with the director again for the highly anticipated In the Heart of the Sea (due in theaters in December). And although his endeavor with Michael Mann on Blackhat didn't quite go as planned, it was another unique role for the star. This summer, Hemsworth will head into comedy for the first time, with the role of Stone Crandall in Vacation. From the trailers, it looks like Hemsworth might just steal the show. So with all that in mind, I can't help but feel that he's perfect to star in Ghostbusters. I really admired everything that Feig did on Spy, and my excitement for Ghostbusters is actually pretty high. This gender-swapping thing feels smart, and most of all, it feels right. We're not retreading old ground here. Ghostbusters 2016 will be fresh and unique, and that has me very interested in this film.
