Warner Bros. courting Eddie Redmayne for 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'

Franchises in Hollywood are great, but they inevitably have to end at some point. Warner Bros. ran into this problem back in 2011 when the Harry Potter series, their biggest moneymaker, ended with The Deathly Hallows- Part 2. There were no more books to adapt and Rowling insisted that Harry Potter 8 was not coming down the pipeline- ever. Since its inception in 2001, the franchise had pulled in nearly $7.7 billion for Warner Bros. and was deemed the most successful series in Hollywood history. There was no way that they could just let that go, right? Warner Bros. needed a new way to make money off of Potter, so in addition to the theme parks and merchandise, the studio commissioned Rowling to write the screenplay for a spin-off trilogy, titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Yesterday, the first bit of casting news for the new series broke, and it's one that could definitely entice fans.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and various insider trades, Eddie Redmayne is the studio favorite to star in this new trilogy set in the Potter universe. The Oscar-winning star of The Theory of Everything will reportedly not commit until he reads Rowling's finished script for the film. There is no offer yet, but with director David Yates back on board, I can't imagine Redmayne turning this one down. He doesn't have anything on his plate besides Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl, an early Oscar front-runner for next year, so I think we'll definitely hearing more about Redmayne and Potter in the near future. I personally like Redmayne and think that he'd be great in a Potter spin-off. Even though he's the most Oscar-baity actor in Hollywood, that doesn't take away from the fact that he is very good at what he does.

I'm also excited by the potential of this new franchise. While Warner Bros. is definitely treading into Hobbit territory here, there's a lot of potential for something fresh and unique with this new series. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is currently set for release on November 18, 2016.
