'Kingsman' star Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba in talks to join Paramount's 'Star Trek 3'

One of the most consistent franchises in Hollywood over the last few years has been the rebooted version of Star Trek. Granted, there have only been two films but both of them were absolutely spectacular. J.J. Abrams did a phenomenal job of updating Star Trek for the modern age while also maintaining the integrity of the original series (the action has been substantially increased though). Now, Abrams has moved on to head up Disney's Star Wars series and the Star Trek franchise is in the hands of Justin Lin, the man who resurrected Fast and Furious and turned it into a worldwide smash. Star Trek 3 is currently set for release on July 8, 2016 and fans are chomping at the bit to get more information about the film. And although Paramount has maintained Abrams' style of secrecy, we do know that Simon Pegg is writing the script and that most of the principal cast members are set to return. However, in recent weeks, we've started to receive small bits of information about the new cast members who might be joining the franchise for its third installment.

A few weeks back, Variety broke the news that Idris Elba, the star of films such as Thor and Pacific Rim, as well as the TV show Luther, is in talks to play a villain in Star Trek 3, possibly a Klingon leader. While Elba has been embroiled in a bit of controversy over whether or not he should be James Bond after Daniel Craig retires, this role would be a major career boost. And if he's truly playing a Klingon, that would drive fans even crazier. I personally would be happy to see Elba take a more major role in a blockbuster. He's been stuck doing great work as a supporting character in films like Prometheus and I would love to see him become a star.

Now, Deadline is reporting that Kingsman star Sofia Boutella is in the mix for a lead role in the sequel. Boutella played Gazelle, the amputee with knives for legs, in Kingsman and she did a fairly good job. I wasn't stunned by her performance, but she was sufficient for the role and her fight scenes were incredible. Tackling a bigger role will be interesting but I'm willing to give her a shot. As long as some sort of martial arts action is involved, I'm all in.

As for Star Trek 3, I must say that I'm still very excited for the film despite Abrams' departure from the franchise. With Lin at the helm and Pegg writing the script, there's very little chance that this ends up being bad. Star Trek Into Darkness is a film that improves on rewatch and I'm hoping that Star Trek 3 does the same thing. It's definitely one of my most anticipated films of 2016. Star Trek 3 stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Karl Urban and Simon Pegg and will hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
