If you want to get a lot of jobs in Hollywood, just go and direct a Fast and Furious movie. Director Justin Lin departed the franchise in 2013 after being at the helm for several of the series' biggest installments and Lin was immediately offered a bevy of projects. He's now directing Star Trek 3 and a new Bourne project, as well as having some involvement with a new Wolfman film and a Shaolin Temple remake. The Fast series breathed life into Lin's career and the same thing is now happening for James Wan, the renowned horror director known best for Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring. Wan took over for Lin on Furious 7, but now his career is up in the air and he's being offered a wide assortment of projects. He's officially set to direct The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist and has an option for Furious 8, but another major project just came down the pipeline that could permanently change his career path.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wan is being heavily pursued by Warner Bros. for Aquaman, the DC superhero flick set to star Jason Momoa. However, as THR notes, Universal does hold an option on Wan for Furious 8, so he could be forced to continue work on the franchise whether or not he wants to. But there has been a noticeable lack of movement on the Furious 8 front, with some producers even saying that they're just enjoying this victory. With Dwayne Johnson's contract up and Paul Walker written out of the franchise, the Furious series is stuck in limbo despite the seventh installment's massive success.
Aquaman is going to be one of Warner Bros.' tougher DC comics projects, but it is pretty far away at this point. The film is currently set for release on June 27, 2018 and Warner has five other DC properties to worry about before Aquaman hits theaters. However, I will say that I'm glad that Warner Bros. is going after major directors for these films and not just studio pushovers. I'm still worried about Zack Snyder, but that's a discussion for another day. If they do manage to snag Wan, it would be a major victory and it would be very good for their brand. But for now, let's wait and see what happens with the Fast and Furious franchise. Then we can start talking about Wan's future with DC.
