DC is behind Marvel in almost every single race, but they're going to win the distinct title of being the first studio to release a solo film with a female superhero in the lead. Wonder Woman, which is set to hit theaters on June 23, 2017, will likely still hit theaters before any of Marvel's solo female superhero films, but they did just run into a pretty major setback. Because of the fact that this was the first superhero flick to star a female, Warner Bros. initially wanted a woman to direct the film. The studio hired Michelle MacLaren, the veteran TV director responsible for many episodes of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and Game of Thrones. Hollywood applauded Warner's decision and opinion was almost universally positive. Today, the game has changed for Wonder Woman and it will be interesting to see where the project goes from here.

"Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and director Wonder Woman together," said the studio (via THR). This is rather shocking news, but in all honesty, completely unsurprising. These superhero films can't take risks anymore and they must squarely fit within the studio's mindset. If Warner Bros. wanted MacLaren to include certain elements that she wasn't a fan of, this split isn't shocking. Marvel is notoriously difficult for some directors, with Patty Jenkins and Edgar Wright both departing projects in the past due to creative differences. Warner Bros. will find a new director in no time, but with only two years before the film's set release date, they'll need to get moving fast. Wonder Woman is set to star Gal Gadot and Scott Eastwood and will hit theaters on June 23, 2017.
