Universal just swapped the release dates of two of their biggest upcoming tentpoles and it looks like both are poised to be hits. The Mummy, the reboot of the famed horror franchise, was previously set to hit theaters on April 22, 2016, but will now debut two months later on June 24, 2016. The film, which is an action/adventure film with horror mixed in, is one of the big films in the upcoming Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe and will probably be one of the biggest hits of that summer. Alex Kurtzman is currently in negotiations to direct the film and it will probably be made official soon. The Mummy will debut two weeks after Uncharted, a very similar film, and one week before The BFG, Angry Birds (such a bad idea), Independence Day 2, and Tarzan. I'm looking forward to it.
Universal also made another move today that will certainly shake up the 2016 box office landscape. The Huntsman, a spin-off of 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman was currently set for a tentative 2016 release date, but it now will officially hit theaters on April 22, 2016. Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron will reprise their roles and Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) is set to direct. I have to say, I'm not looking forward to this film. Snow White was a bad film, but I do think that Hemsworth is a great actor, so I'm excited to see what he can do in a starring role. And Frank Darabont is a talented director. However, I still just don't like these revisionist fairy tale movies. They're so boring.
