'Transformers: Age of Extinction' leads again, newcomers disappoint at Fourth of July weekend box office
With three uninteresting new releases and a holdover that most people had already seen, the Fourth of July weekend box office was pretty desolate. Transformers: Age of Extinction topped the box office again with $36.4 million this weekend. That's a steep 64% drop from last weekend, but take note that some demand was burned off on Wednesday and Thursday. The action blockbuster has grossed $174.7 million so far and is currently trailing all of the other Transformers movies. At the same time in its run, Transformers: Dark of the Moon had grossed $228.8 million already. However, overseas box office is still strong ($575 million worldwide so far) and people are still watching these movies so Transformers 5 can't be far off.
In second place was Warner Bros.' Tammy, a new comedy starring Melissa McCarthy. The poorly reviewed film (26% on Rotten Tomatoes) took in $21.1 million over the three-day weekend and a grand total of $32.9 million for the five-day weekend. Tammy debuted lower than any previous McCarthy film and also received a poor "C+" Cinemascore. Word of mouth for this one will be very bad and the film will likely tap out with around $60 million. Somewhat shocking, but then again, the film looked awful. Look for McCarthy to regain some credibility in October with St. Vincent, a new dramedy that stars her and Bill Murray. That movie looks much better than the crap she's churned out recently.
Third place belonged to Deliver Us From Evil, Sony's new horror thriller starring Eric Bana and Edgar Ramirez. The film grossed $9.5 million over the three-day weekend and $15 million for the five-day weekend. Not an awful start, but this movie should have done much better considering that there has not been a horror film in theaters for a while. Maybe people were holding out for The Purge: Anarchy (which I'm seeing tomorrow). The "B-" Cinemascore is okay for a horror film, but still not great. Expect Deliver Us From Evil to quickly fade into oblivion.
A pair of holdovers held the fourth and fifth spots. First was 22 Jump Street in fourth place. The film added $9.4 million this weekend for a total of $158.8 million. Look for 22 Jump Street to finish with around $175 million. After that, How To Train Your Dragon 2 took the fifth place slot with $8.7 million. The big-budget animated disappointment has now taken in $140 million, which is way below expectations. It'll be interesting to see how the third film is treated after this disappointment.
The other new wide release this weekend was Earth to Echo, Relativity's new family adventure. The found footage film grossed $8.2 million this weekend and a total of $13.5 million over the extended period. Earth to Echo did receive an "A-" Cinemascore, which is good news, but I still doubt that this film will end up with more than $25 million. It's just too small.
Disney's Maleficent finished in seventh place this weekend with $6.1 million. The Angelina Jolie-starred fantasy flick has now taken in $213.8 million in the US and $630.1 million worldwide. Very impressive. In eighth place was Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys, which eased 33% for a $5.1 million weekend. The musical biopic has now grossed $36.7 million.
Sony's Think Like A Man Too ended up in ninth place this weekend with $4.9 million. The PG-13 comedy has $57.1 million in the bank already and will probably crawl its way to $65 million. Not good, considering that the movie opened with $30 million. And finally, Edge of Tomorrow rounded out the top ten with $3.6 million. The brilliant action flick has now grossed $90.8 million. I don't know if $100 million is in the cards, but I hope that it is.
Also, Dinesh D'Souza's documentary America grossed $2.7 million in eleventh place. The film has now taken in a total of $4 million. In addition to that, Radius TWC's Snowpiercer took in $999K this weekend and has now grossed a total of $1.5 million.
Next weekend sees the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Here are my predictions:
