Sony sets 'Sinister Six' for November 11, 2016 release date, 'Amazing Spider-Man 3' pushed to 2018

Sony's Spider-Man franchise has been in limbo lately after the disappointing results of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Before the film was released, Sony predicted that the superhero sequel would hit $1 billion worldwide and it ended up making only $706 million, which is the worst result in the franchise's history, even with the extra cash the film raked in thanks to IMAX and 3D ticket prices. Sony planned to do a Spider-Man universe similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and after Amazing Spider-Man 2, questions were raised about the future of the franchise. Some suggested that Sony just sell the rights back to Marvel, while others believed that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 (which was previously set for a June 10, 2016) should be pushed back. Latino-Review's El Mayimbe even sent out a tweet this weekend that made many believe that the planned Sinister Six spin-off was canceled. Well, it turns out that's not quite the case.

Sony will now release Sinister Six on November 11, 2016. The spin-off that stars many of the franchise's villains will be written and directed by Drew Goddard, who is best known for directing Cabin in the Woods. It is not currently known which villains will appear in the spin-off, but I'm presuming that the Green Goblin and Rhino will be in the mix. Also, Sony has now delayed The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and it will now hit theaters in 2018. The Amazing Spider-Man 4 has been delayed indefinitely. At this point, it's not known whether or not Andrew Garfield will return to play Spider-Man.

This is not good news for Sony. At this point, they're barely hanging on for life and are only making movies to stop the Spider-Man rights from reverting back to Marvel. Sony barely broke even on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and will likely have to significantly downsize the budget if they want to actually make money. In addition to that, the reaction for TASM2 was mostly negative and many fans have completely turned on the franchise. Sony is just clamoring for a franchise and they're not gonna get it. I was entertained by The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but Sony just needs to kill this franchise. It's done.
