Guillermo del Toro to direct small, black and white film before 'Pacific Rim 2'

Collider's just been getting all the good Guillermo del Toro news lately. A couple of weeks ago, the entertainment website reported that Pacific Rim 2, a sequel to the 2013 monsters vs. robots hit, had been greenlit by Universal for a planned 2017 release.Guillermo del Toro, who directed Pacific Rim, is currently in post-production on his Gothic horror film Crimson Peak, which will hit theaters in October 2015. Most people presumed that del Toro would finish editing Crimson Peak and then move on and direct Pacific Rim 2. Well, it turns out that's not the case.

In an exclusive interview with Collider, del Toro disclosed that he will direct a small, black and white drama before Pacific Rim 2. Here's the direct quote from del Toro:

"Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting- we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017."

The article also includes a few other quotes from del Toro about the film and some of them are pretty interesting. He wants John Hurt and an unknown actress to star in the film and it will also have one giant creature in it. All in all, that's some very interesting information and I'm very happy to hear that he's squeezing a smaller film in there between all these big-budget film. I just love del Toro's imagination and I'm down for whatever he creates. Pacific Rim 2 hits theaters on April 7, 2017. No word on when this new film will be released.
