We're in the heat of awards season right now, as the Oscar nominations were just announced on Thursday, the Golden Globes were last Sunday, and tonight are the SAG awards. This is another awards show that will hint at what's to come on Oscar Sunday. Apparently, Lone Survivor and Game of Thrones already won the awards for stunt crews. But there still are a lot of awards to hand out. Here are my predictions for the film categories at tonight's Screen Actors Guild Awards. Predicted winners are noted in bold print.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A CAST IN A MOTION PICTURE
12 YEARS A SLAVE
AMERICAN HUSTLE
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY
DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER
American Hustle is a traditional ensemble film and has a stunning cast of actors. I think that 12 Years A Slave is the closest competition here, but I believe that American Hustle is the clear favorite. I would believe that the SAG would go for an actor's film, but I could be wrong. I think that Lee Daniels' The Butler and August: Osage County have an outside shot, but I think that this race is down to Hustle and Slave. And I think that American Hustle comes out on top.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Bruce Dern, NEBRASKA
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 YEARS A SLAVE
Tom Hanks, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
Matthew McConaughey, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
Forest Whitaker, LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER
The fact that this is the Screen Actor's Guild, an awards show that solely recognizes actors and casts, leads me to believe that Bruce Dern will pull off the upset here for his performance in Nebraska. It's a good performance and Dern has been in Hollywood forever. I think that McConaughey is the smartest choice, but I'm going with the upset here.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Cate Blanchett, BLUE JASMINE
Sandra Bullock, GRAVITY
Judi Dench, PHILOMENA
Meryl Streep, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY
Emma Thompson, SAVING MR. BANKS
Cate Blanchett all the way here. Since Blue Jasmine was released, Blanchett has been the favorite and I don't see anything different happening here. Maybe Judi Dench has an outside chance at pulling off the win, but I don't see it right now.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Barkhad Abdi, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
Daniel Bruhl, RUSH
Michael Fassbender, 12 YEARS A SLAVE
James Gandolfini, ENOUGH SAID
Jared Leto, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
This is another one in the win column for Jared Leto. The actor has dominated the awards circuit so far, and I don't see any reason why he won't get recognized here as well. I'm hoping for the win by Bruhl, and I can see Gandolfini as a dark horse, but I still see Leto taking this one home.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Jennifer Lawrence, AMERICAN HUSTLE
Lupita Nyong'o, 12 YEARS A SLAVE
Julia Roberts, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY
June Squibb, NEBRASKA
Oprah Winfrey, LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER
Jennifer Lawrence is the favorite here. After taking home the Golden Globe last weekend, I see no reason why she wouldn't take home the SAG trophy as well. Lupita Nyong'o is also a strong contender and you never can count out Oprah, but I think that Lawrence has the best chance here.
