'Rock of Ages', 'That's My Boy' bomb, 'Madagascar 3' wins again

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted won the box office again this weekend with $35.5 million. That was half a million off of my original projection, and the film dropped 41% from $60.3 million. The animated threequel has now made $120 million. Fox's Prometheus dropped like a rock to $20.2 million in its second weekend. The film, which somehow finished in second place this weekend has sparked much negative conversation about the ending that leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The film had a 60% drop and the thriller has now made $88.9 million. The star-studded musical Rock of Ages was a big flop with only $15 million in its opening weekend. That was nearly $20 million off my projection and the film can be cited as the latest tentpole to flop. I don't really think that Warner. Brothers intended for this to be a huge opener (although, projections ranged from $20 to $35 million), but they expected the film to make a lot of money off word of mouth and with a B cinemascore, it doesn't look like that will happen. Snow White and the Huntsman finished in fourth with $13.8 million. Huntsman now has a total of $122.5 million but with a production budget of $170 million and middling international totals, the film may not warrent a sequel. Adam Sandler's That's My Boy became the first comedy by Sandler to flop since Little Nicky. The R-rated comedy bombed with $13 million, which was good enough for fifth place. Yikes. MIB3 made another $10 milllion to raise its total to $152.6, while The Avengers dropped softly to $8.8 million for a total of $586.7 milion. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom both made around $2.2 milllion.

June 22-24 Projections

Next weekend, another animated movie will rule the box office, this time in the form of Pixar's Brave. Despite a rare misfire in Cars 2, Pixar is still the animation king at the box office. The last animated movie with a heroine was Disney's Tangled, which opened to $48.8 million. Brave should open significantly higher than that movie because of the Pixar brand. Look for Brave to gross around $57 million next weekend. Also opening is the high concept action-horror flick Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I think that this film has  flop written all over it and will open at around $10 million. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World will open less than Vampire Hunter, but it could make more in the long run. Look for a total of around $8 million. Madagascar 3 will drop harder because of Brave and Prometheus will drop less.
