Rachel Weisz and David Harbour in talks to join the growing cast of Marvel's 'Black Widow'

At this point, here's something we all know: Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Endgame is going to substantially change the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It could alter the course of MCU history through time travel or open up the universe to new possibilities, but most importantly, Endgame will likely mark the end for a number of characters who have been with the franchise for a very long time. While it's widely speculated that both Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark and Chris Evans' Steve Rogers will exit stage left either through a heroic sacrifice or a less fatal conclusion, there's also a very strong possibility that a significant number of secondary characters will die to bring back the currently disintegrated Avengers. Will Hawkeye/Ronin (Jeremy Renner) perish in order to see his family return? What will Okoye (Danai Gurira) do to restore order to Wakanda?

Arguably the biggest question mark is Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff, one of the six original Avengers and a heavy favorite to bite the bullet in Endgame. There's just one small wrinkle in that theory-- Johansson is already set to return for a Black Widow stand-alone vehicle from director Cate Shortland. But will it be an origin story or a follow-up?

Nobody knows the answer to that question, but some breaking news earlier today will help Marvel distract from the lingering uncertainty over the film's exact nature. With Johansson and rising star Florence Pugh already leading the cast, Variety's Justin Kroll reported today that Rachel Weisz, the Oscar-winning star of The Constant Gardener and The Favourite, is in talks to join the cast of the film. Much like prior reports, Variety's scoop gives no additional details on the role Weisz is up for, nor does it confirm whether or not this is a prequel. So we're once again left in the dark, albeit with some extremely exciting casting news to keep everyone intrigued.

With her Yorgos Lanthimos collaborations, Weisz has seen her career enter a more adventurous, downright bizarre mode, which has resulted in some truly extraordinary work. Still, it'll be fun to see her return to blockbusters, hopefully in a significant role that lets her steal the spotlight from her new Marvel co-stars. Weisz currently has no upcoming projects confirmed on IMDb, so this will likely be her next major film.

But wait! That wasn't all the Black Widow news the Hollywood trades had for us today. The Hollywood Report's Borys Kit revealed that David Harbour, star of Stranger Things and the upcoming Hellboy reboot, has joined Johansson, Pugh, and Weisz in the star-studded cast of the film. THR couldn't provide any details on who Harbour would be playing, but Kit mentions that Black Widow is preparing to commence production in London in June. Before he joins the MCU, Harbour's will be seen in next Friday's Hellboy and return for Stranger Things 3 this summer. But in a way, his casting in the MCU was already telegraphed by his role in Dhaka, a film led by Thor star Chris Hemsworth and scripted by Endgame's Joe Russo. It was an inevitability that Harbour would join the rest of the gang.

What can I say when I know so little information about what the film is about or who the characters even are? I've always adored Harbour's performance in Stranger Things, so I'm quite intrigued to see him join the most high-profile franchise on the planet. All things considered, this is shaping up to be quite an ensemble.

Black Widow (or whatever this ends up being officially called) will likely hit theaters sometime in 2020. Look for more casting news in the near future.
