Super Bowl Trailers & TV Spots: Marvel's 'Avengers: Endgame,' Jordan Peele's 'Us,' 'Toy Story 4,' and more

For a multitude of reasons, the 2018 Super Bowl was arguably the best in my lifetime. Of course, the game was a classic thriller, one that ended with Nick Foles and the Philadelphia Eagles defeating Tom Brady and the villainous Patriots. But the marketing frenzy around the game was even more spectacular, headlined by the show-stopping trailer for Mission: Impossible- Fallout and brief spots for hotly-anticipated titles like Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story. And if that wasn't enough, Netflix also decided to push forward with the surprise release of The Cloverfield Paradox at the end of the game. Which was kind of unprecedented. Which I happened to predict on Twitter. Which led Netflix to retweet my original prediction. Anyways, it was cool.

This Super Bowl was, uh, not nearly as good. The game was a snooze fest, there was no shock Netflix release, and even the trailers didn't really break the internet. However, there are still a few brief clips worth discussing, led by a 30 second spot for Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Endgame. Watch it (or watch it again) below!

"Not us."

Okay, so as many have noted already, this is absolutely the "Daaaarkness, no parents" version of an Avengers trailer, but that doesn't mean it's any less exciting. It's also clear that much of this footage has been condensed, edited, and manipulated in order to preserve the secrets of Marvel's upcoming three-hour epic, which is a very reasonable decision by all involved. In a way, it's almost pathetic how little Marvel needs to do to get us excited for the final chapter. A shot of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) looking morose and angry, a callback to Iron Man with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) building something, a few images of the team gearing up for battle- show this all to Marvel fans and it's enough to send heart rates skyrocketing.

Avengers: Endgame will be in theaters on April 26. After the release of Captain Marvel, we should see a full trailer on the web.

Next up, a second trailer for Jordan Peele's Us!

I think I've seen all the footage I need to see from Us. I'm in, I'm sold, I'm there opening night, inject this movie directly into my veins, etc. I love that Peele seems to be playing initially playing in an eerie freakout mode before shifting to full-blown home invasion horror, and I'm almost scared to know much more about where this is headed. The scariest moment from this brief clip comes when the family first shows up in the driveway; something about Lupita Nyong'o's reaction in that moment is all kinds of unsettling. Sorry, Captain Marvel- this is easily my most anticipated movie of March.

Us debuts on March 22. Next up, another brief teaser for Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 4!

This is the lamest TV spot of the bunch, mostly because I'm certain we'll be getting a full trailer for Toy Story 4 in about a month's time. Key and Peele's Ducky and Bunny seem like entertaining characters, but it feels odd that Disney isn't playing off the nostalgia of the franchise more. Show the old gang back together- it's what all the fans want to see!

Well, at least Bo Peep is back. Toy Story 4 will hit theaters on June 21. Finally, here's another 30 seconds of footage from Captain Marvel.

"Higher. Further. Faster." is truly a killer tagline, but honestly, what's left to say about Captain Marvel at this stage in the marketing process? It comes out a month from tomorrow, it'll probably be pretty good, and it'll likely end with a tease for Endgame that will send fans into a frenzy. The footage looks solid, but it's too late to change many minds on this one- bring on the first screening reactions.

Well, that was my belated Super Bowl recap. Like I said, kind of a lame year.

Anyways, look for more reviews and news in the near future!
