Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham join forces in gleefully absurd trailer for 'Hobbs & Shaw'

The Fast and the Furious franchise has always been on the ridiculous side, but 2017 saw that madness reach new heights in F. Gary Gray's The Fate of the Furious. Well, maybe it didn't top the skyscraper-hopping, automobile-skydiving stupidity of James Wan's wildly popular Furious 7. But after evolving from a street racing saga (disclaimer: I never actually saw the first four movies in the series) to one of the most beloved global action brands in recent history, Fate of the Furious slipped by delving into tedious excess. Tanks and ice chases are prison brawls are all fun, sure, but there was an inescapable sensation of emptiness. Box office receipts fell in the U.S., and even though Fast & Furious 9 and 10 were already on the release calendar, was there really anywhere left for this series to go?

Enter David Leitch. The action mastermind behind Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde was hired to direct a spin-off led by Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw. This seemed like a potentially inspired idea on paper; today, we received evidence that it may have been a stroke of genius. Watch the first trailer for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw below!

Okay. Have you processed that trailer yet? Alright, let's dig in.

I thought I was done with the Fast & Furious franchise. I really did. I was intrigued when David Leitch signed on, but I never thought a spin-off would be something worth actively anticipating. Then they went and made the best tonal decision possible- the Fast & Furious series is now fully committed to being absurd. It's basically a buddy comedy, and while I'm sure Idris Elba's superpowered arch-nemesis will provide enough stakes to qualify Hobbs & Shaw as an action epic, it looks goofy as hell.

Obviously I'm here for it. This looks incredible.

Instead of offering cohesive, complex thoughts on this trailer, I'm just going to create a list of bullet points mentioning every ridiculous, stupidly fun moment:

-Idris Elba is playing an enhanced human. Yes, this is not a joke.
-Vanessa Kirby!
-Hobbs eats a spoonful of coffee grounds. Part of every nutritious breakfast.
-Shaw kills someone with a champagne bottle, in true John Wick fashion.
-Okay, so there's explosions, car crashes, we all know the deal there.
-"Why Can't We Be Friends" is maybe the most brilliant trailer song choice of the last few years.
-Oh, they're running down buildings now. Sure, I'll go with it.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw will open in theaters on August 2. This is the most excited I've ever been for one of these silly movies.
