Anya Taylor-Joy to star in Edgar Wright's horror/thriller 'Last Night in Soho'

After five beloved features over the last 15 years, it's safe to say that Edgar Wright is one of those filmmakers who can effortlessly generate rabid anticipation based on his name alone. Granted, this didn't always translate into mainstream box office success- until 2017's Baby Driver, Wright's films were consistently ignored by American audiences. But since that heist film/musical became a solid smash (and something of a generational touchstone, I would argue), it's easy to imagine Wright becoming even more of a household name. While there was a good deal of mystery concerning what his next project would be (Baby Driver 2? An animated feature? Grasshopper Jungle?), the British filmmaker finally lifted the curtain last month, revealing that he's working on a straight-up psychological thriller/horror film in the vein of Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now and Roman Polanski's Repulsion. Just a few weeks later, we've officially learned who will be leading the much-anticipated film.

After a few carefully placed Twitter rumors by Collider scoop expert Jeff Sneider, Variety's Justin Kroll exclusively reported that Anya Taylor-Joy, star of Robert Eggers' The Witch and M. Night Shyamalan's Split and Glass, will lead Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho. The Variety report reveals that Taylor-Joy will play "one of the leads," which implies that some major casting decisions for the Focus Features and Working Title project (also a newly confirmed bit of info in the report) are still underway. Production will begin in the summer. In terms of upcoming releases, Taylor-Joy also has Josh Boone's The New Mutants on the horizon, but that film has undergone so many production woes that it's impossible to know when we'll actually see it.

Overall, this is an exciting move for a potentially incredible project. Taylor-Joy has proven to be an exceptional actress over her first few genre efforts, and Wright has a tendency to get the best out of his performers. I can't wait to hear more about where Last Night in Soho is headed- and considering the upcoming start date, new information shouldn't be too far away.
