Surprise teaser drops for Jason Reitman's newly announced 'Ghostbusters' sequel

I thought we were done with Ghostbusters. I really did.

After years of discussions about a potential Ghostbusters 3, a sequel that would potentially reunite stars Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, director Paul Feig moved forward on an all-women reboot with Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig.

This, uh, did not go over well in a few dark, antiquated corners of the internet. The idea of women as Ghostbusters was just too much for some male fans to handle, and the reboot soon found itself at the center of an intense discussion that had little to do with the film itself. Yes, Feig and company happened to make a bad movie in the end (nothing egregious, however), but the venomous reactions were enough to make you wish no Ghosbusters sequel had ever been made. The film sank like a stone at the box office, the pop culture fans who spent so much time discussing it completely forgot about it, and after that, everyone just kind of assumed Sony was done with the franchise. They'll be fine making Venom sequels every two years for the next decade; why jump into the world of playful ghosts again?

Enter Jason Reitman, the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Fresh off the one-two punch of Tully and The Front Runner, Reitman is now at the helm of a new Ghostbusters movie, according to Anthony Breznican over at Entertainment Weekly. Until recently, the film was being planned in secret, but it's sure to become the focus of a significant amount of online attention over the next few months. Per EW, Reitman co-wrote the script with Gil Kenan, and they're seemingly planning to release details on casting and other additional information in staggered intervals. The film will shoot in the coming months, and it'll be in theaters by Summer 2020. There is also an animated Ghostbusters movie in production, but Reitman's new film will be the first down the pipeline.

Reitman noted that this sequel will take place in the world of the original film, ignoring the continuity of Feig's project. On directing the film, Reitman said to EW: "I've always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans."

Ivan Reitman will produce the film. In a quote, he said: "It will be a passing of the torch both inside and out. It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career of his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil...."

The next day, Sony dropped an announcement teaser on EW- check it out below!

Obviously there's not much there, but hey, at least it's something! At the moment, I do not care in the least bit about a Ghostbusters sequel/reboot/legacyquel/whatever the hell this ends up being. But I'm open to changing my mind! We'll see how this all progresses, and I'm sure we'll hear much more about what Reitman has in store in the very near future.
