Peter Parker heads to Europe in first trailer for 'Spider-Man: Far From Home'

When I walked out of Avengers: Infinity War last April, I had a lot of thoughts- much like everyone else. But when the dust literally and metaphorically settled, the marketing nerd in my brain only had one question- what was Marvel going to do with Spider-Man: Far From Home? At the time, the still-untitled Avengers 4 (now officially titled Endgame) was set for release on May 3, 2019, with Far From Home following it just two months later on July 5, 2019. Normally, that wouldn't be a problem; Marvel has quickly developed a formula for marketing several releases at the same time.

But, uh, Spider-Man is technically dead- he was snapped away by Thanos' fingers during the universe-decimating finale of Joe and Anthony Russo's epic superhero movie. Yet less than a year later, here he is, roaming around Europe without a care in the world. We knew Sony wouldn't resist the temptation to show us Peter alive in action before May, but we also know that Far From Home takes place after Endgame. So there's lots of food for thought for Marvel fans. Anyways, the first trailer is finally here, so check it out below!

This is a terrific trailer, and thankfully for us (though was there ever really any doubt?), there's no mention of Infinity War, Endgame, Thanos, or anything crucial to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Instead, we're treated to a glimpse of where this new installment is headed- Jake Gyllenhaal makes his debut as Mysterio, Nick Fury returns to give Spider-Man his new orders, and there's just enough of the youthful energy and comic wit that director Jon Watts pulled off so well last time. Truth be told, the simple Flash Thompson (Tony Revelori) retort of "Sup, dickwad" got a laugh out of me each time I watched this thing. Broadly speaking, I've come to appreciate Homecoming more with additional viewings, and I've especially come around on Tom Holland's rendition of Peter Parker. From the action sequences to the little high school moments, it appears that Sony and Marvel have the makings of a strong, thoroughly entertaining sequel.

But I can't end my discussion of this trailer without speculating on what it means for Endgame. Despite his significant presence in Homecoming, Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark is nowhere to be found here, which will obviously lead many fans to one conclusion. There is a rather flippant mention of Iron Man and Thor, so maybe we shouldn't jump to too many answers- or maybe we just shouldn't try to judge any of this by one brief clip. However, I will say that I think the jovial atmosphere of the whole endeavor lends some credence to the split timeline theory that some fans have proposed. Nobody in Far From Home looks like they just experienced an apocalyptic event......so maybe it never happened. Maybe the original Avengers rewrote history, creating a different continuum where Parker, T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), and many others never perished, sacrificing their own lives instead. But maybe there is another timeline where Parker is dead. And maybe the two universes can co-exist, even to the extent that we'll see future MCU installments in each world. Who knows! It's all crazy!

Of course, this is just silly, super ridiculous guesswork, but these are certainly fun things to think about as April draws near. Meanwhile, I'm going to listen to that Michael Giacchino riff on the Spider-Man theme song about, oh, I dunno, 50 more times.

Far From Home will swing into theaters on July 5.
