Modern art gets spooky in wicked trailer for Dan Gilroy's 'Velvet Buzzsaw'

Whether it's Cannes, TIFF, or Venice, most major film festivals thrive on big-ticket premieres, splashy galas, and highly anticipated titles from prominent auteurs. Sundance, the Robert Redford-founded Park City winter getaway, always has its fair share of celebrities and acclaimed directors, but the real draw comes from the discoveries, the films that nobody even had on their watchlist before the festival. Set to kick off on January 24, Sundance 2019 is sure to have its fair share of unexpected hits that take audiences in the snowy mountains of Utah by storm. But there are a few high profile films this year, most notably Dan Gilroy's Velvet Buzzsaw, a modern art chiller that also features the reunion of Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. While Gilroy is coming off the significant disappointment of Roman J. Israel, Esq., could this impressive ensemble piece help him get some of that mojo back?

Earlier this morning, Netflix released the first trailer for the film- watch it below!

Velvet Buzzsaw has been on my radar since last year, when I first learned that Gyllenhaal, Russo, and Gilroy were teaming up for some kind of modern art piece. But despite the overall hype, nobody really knew what we were getting into. A dark satire similar to Nightcrawler? A full-fledged horror movie? A less sinister comedy? It was a mystery for a long time.

When I wrote about Buzzsaw in my Top 25 Most Anticipated, I noted some concern that Netflix had decided to forgo a fall festival release in favor of this February bow. Well, I think I get it now. Velvet Buzzsaw looks absolutely sensational- a wicked, clever, and deliciously dark mockery of the art world doubling as a horror thriller- but it's certainly not an Oscar contender. This looks like a campy B-movie with a prestige cast, and I am absolutely loving that vibe. Gilroy somehow got John Malkovich, Toni Collette, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, and Billy Magnussen to sign on for this wild ride about deranged art, and I simply cannot wait to see the results. Bring on the madness.

Thankfully we're only a few weeks away- Velvet Buzzsaw hits Netflix on February 1 after its Sundance premiere.
