Edgar Wright set to direct an untitled psychological horror/thriller inspired by 'Don't Look Now'

After spending years as one of the industry's most beloved genre filmmakers, earning raves for cult classics like Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World along the way, Edgar Wright finally entered the mainstream in 2017 with Baby Driver. The musical heist film, meticulously set to a soundtrack of Wright's favorites, received glowing reviews from critics and fans- which is practically natural for a new project from the detailed auteur. But in a welcome twist, the Ansel Elgort-led crime saga became a box office hit, grossing $107 million in the US and another $119 million overseas. Sony (the studio behind the film) was obviously keen on putting the wheels in motion for a follow-up, but Wright fans were more concerned with the possibility of more original projects from the filmmaker. After the disappointing conclusion of the Ant-Man drama, would Wright return to direct an adaptation of Grasshopper Jungle? Turn to the realm of animation with Shadows? Well, it turns out the answer is none of the above- Wright is turning to something completely new, and it sounds totally thrilling.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Wright exclusively revealed some new details on his next feature, which will be a "psychological horror/thriller" in the vein of Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now and Roman Polanski's Repulsion. Here's the quote from Wright on the film:

"I realised I had never made a film about central London- specifically Soho, somewhere I've spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead you make movies about places you've lived in. This movie is about the London I've existed in."

If you're wondering when we'll see this new feature from Wright (who's also co-writing from a script by Krysty Wilson-Cairns), it might not be too long. Per the Empire report, the film will shoot this summer; presumably, that means we're looking at a 2020 release date. In the article, there's also some insight on Baby Driver 2, which currently has a first draft- still no word if Wright will direct.

Look, if you've known me for a while or you've read this site in past years, you know my love for Wright's work. I would be excited for anything he decided to do, but something about a pure horror film is particularly enticing. I'm actually watching Don't Look Now in a class next week, and I plan on brushing up on Repulsion as well, just to get a better sense of what Wright has in store. And with the summer shoot date quickly approaching, it's likely that we'll hear much more about the cast in the near future.

I couldn't be more ready.
