Christopher McQuarrie finalizes deal to return for back-to-back 'Mission: Impossible' installments in 2021 and 2022

While James Bond has laid dormant for several years thanks to a flurry of behind-the-scenes issues, the Mission: Impossible franchise has taken up the mantle of the best modern spy series. In the first half of the decade, Ghost Protocol rocked everyone's world, but it still paled in comparison to Skyfall, Sam Mendes' spectacular re-invigoration of the iconic British spy. But after the astonishing success of Mission: Impossible- Fallout, one of 2018's greatest achievements and one of the finest action movies ever made, director Christopher McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise can finally stake their claim as the premiere action producers on the planet. As soon as the credits rolled on Fallout, an epic continuation of Rogue Nation's story, awestruck fans only had one question- how the hell can they top this?

Many thought they wouldn't even try. Since that film's July 2018 release, I've wondered many times if the nuclear happenings of Fallout would represent the end for Ethan Hunt. After all, could there even be a more fitting conclusion?

Well, it seems like McQuarrie and Cruise are going to give it their best shot. Yesterday, Variety reported that Christopher McQuarrie, director of Rogue Nation and Fallout, is returning for not one, but two more Mission: Impossible adventures. Cruise, as the producer and star of the series, will also reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in both films. Similar to the original plan (which was later scrapped) for Spectre and the 25th Bond film, McQuarrie will shoot M:I 7 and M:I 8 back-to-back, preparing the two films for release dates in Summer 2021 and Summer 2022, respectively. With Cruise currently in production on Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick (now set for 2020 after a delay), McQuarrie will soon begin writing the scripts for a production start in 2019. Cruise and McQuarrie confirmed the sequels on their respective Twitter pages.

I truly, no matter how hard I try, cannot convey how excited I am by this news. Fallout ended up at #2 on my Top 25 of 2018 list, and despite my undying love for Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, I think it's by far the best of the series. While the HALO-jumping, bathroom-fighting, motorcycle-chasing, nuclear bomb-thwarting journey could have served as a fitting swan song for the IMF's most talented spy, my mind is virtually overwhelmed by the idea of two more globe-trotting trips with Ethan Hunt. Of course, this development leads to one question- will this be the end for Tom Cruise in this role?

We'll find out soon. For now, let's just be thrilled by the idea of two more Cruise/McQuarrie collaborations.
