Chaos at the Golden Globes: 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Green Book' take home Best Picture trophies in disastrous night for Oscar race

So I haven't written much about this awards season, which can be chalked up to a number of reasons, from extreme busyness and a high-than-average number of reviews to a feeling of general disinterest. Don't get me wrong, I like quite a few of the movies up for the major awards this season- A Star is Born, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, and The Favourite all made my Top 25 this year. But there's no major contender that I feel too passionate about, no film that I feel compelled to go fight for over the course of the grueling awards season. And after the disappointment of Shape of Water's Oscar triumph, it's hard to get too invested in any of the shenanigans.

In all honesty, I didn't plan to write much about this season. Maybe a few Oscar posts, maybe some final predictions, but nothing else.

Then last night happened. In case you haven't heard already, check out the results of the 2019 Golden Globe Awards below!

Suddenly, Oscar season has gone off the rails. As I said on Twitter, we're at the point in the superhero movie where things are dark and hope seems lost; Harvey Dent is warming up his motivational speech. Two of the most inert and undeserving films of this awards season have taken the top honors at the Golden Globes, shifting the conversation from unique, challenging titles to bland crowd-pleasers.

Now, it's important to recognize that the Golden Globes don't necessarily translate to Oscar wins. The Shape of Water was shut out by the organization in 2018, after all. But if the organization that officially kicked off the battle between La La Land and Moonlight just two years ago decided to name Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book the best films of the year, we're in trouble. In a year with no clear front-runner, I suppose this makes some kind of sense. A Star is Born has never felt like the dominant contender, and every other movie comes equipped with serious hurdles.

But that doesn't make it any less infuriating. A disastrous Queen biopic and a regressive race relations drama won the day at the Globes. It would be stunning- in the most frustrating way possible- if the Oscars followed suit.

For the first time, I'm invested in the Oscar race because of films that I actively believe should lose. Sure, I disliked The Revenant and The Shape of Water, but I've never felt the kind of disdain I feel for this year's Globes winners. Time to hope and pray that it's just a fluke.

Get ready, Oscar fans. This is bound to get ugly.
