Can 'Black Panther' win Best Picture after crucial win at SAG Awards?

Believe it or not, another Oscar season is almost (finally) in the home stretch. We're only a few days away from February, which means the big night at the Dolby Theater isn't very far behind, and it also means movie fans around the world can finally put this messy, bizarre Oscar race behind them. But if the last few weeks since the Golden Globes have hinted at a nightmarish finale to the race, last night's Screen Actors Guild Awards hinted at a much more satisfying conclusion. Before I dive in with my brief thoughts, check out last night's winners below the photo!

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture- Black Panther

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role- Glenn Close, The Wife

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role- Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role- Emily Blunt, A Quiet Place

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role- Mahershala Ali, Green Book

Okay, some thoughts. I think, at this point in the race, we can safely say that Glenn Close, Rami Malek, and Mahershala Ali have locked up their wins. If anyone else wins on Oscar night, it'll be a huge, buzzed-about update. Supporting Actress is much more interesting at the moment, since Emily Blunt isn't even nominated at the Oscars- that leaves room for either the Regina King victory everyone wants or a big surprise that nobody will see coming.

As for Black Panther's big win, it's a bit more complicated. Like I noted on my Twitter page, the SAG Ensemble category is often out of step with the Oscars. The Shape of Water wasn't even nominated last year, Hidden Figures beat Moonlight in a stunning upset, and you certainly didn't see The Help or American Hustle finish with any Oscar gold. But the other pre-cursors have been wrong before- the Producers Guild Award went to The Big Short and La La Land in 2016 and 2017, respectively, ruining that organization's sterling reputation for predictions. Considering just how weird and bizarre this Oscar season has been from the get-go, highlighted by the stunning success of Green Book and the Bryan Singer-directed Bohemian Rhapsody as well as the strange drop-off of A Star is Born, maybe it's not so unrealistic to hope that Black Panther pulls out a victory in the end.

Yes, Roma is a strong film in a good position, but how awesome would it be to hear "Wakanda Forever" on that stage? It would be a fitting culmination for one of the biggest hits of all time.

Look for more on the awards race very soon....
