Timothée Chalamet, Benicio del Toro, Tilda Swinton, and many more officially join Wes Anderson's 'The French Dispatch'

Four years after the Oscar-winning triumph of The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson returned in early 2018 with Isle of Dogs, his second foray into stop-motion animation after 2009's Fantastic Mr. Fox. While the film was a moderate box office success and early critical favorite, I found it to be a disappointing outing, especially in the immediate aftermath of what is arguably the director's masterpiece. I figured we might be in for another long wait before Anderson's 10th feature, forcing my mixed feelings on Isle to linger in my mind for a bit. Thankfully, the filmmaker is already back behind the camera with a new film, which was originally rumored to be a post-World War II musical. With the project moving forward quickly, additional details are hitting the web on what's shaping up to be a bona fide cinephile event.

According to Indiewire, Wes Anderson is currently shooting his tenth film, officially titled The French Dispatch, in the town of Angoulême in Southwestern France. It is not a musical; instead, the film follows three stories involving an American newspaper in Paris. The post-war period will likely still be in play, but the Indiewire report only lists "20th-century Paris" as the official setting. But for fans, the more exciting news is undoubtedly the all-star ensemble of talent Anderson has gathered for The French Dispatch. The cast is strong and still growing, led by Call Me By Your Name's Timothée Chalamet, Benicio del Toro, Jeffrey Wright, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton. On another note, Indiewire mentions that Brad Pitt, Natalie Portman, and Léa Seydoux are all still rumored for the project; unfortunately, that trio remains unconfirmed at the moment.

The report concludes by noting that The French Dispatch could arrive in Fall 2019, but I'm finding that notion to be a slightly implausible one. Yes, shooting will likely conclude by the spring, but Anderson hasn't debuted a film in the fall since Fantastic Mr. Fox. Will this be the one to change things?

Regardless of when the film ultimately arrives, it's obviously one of my most anticipated of the next several years. Following up The Grand Budapest Hotel with another tale of war-torn Europe and a cast that is nothing shy of uniformly excellent? You bet I'm in. Give me a date and I'll be the first in line.

Look for more on The French Dispatch very, very soon.
