New trailers for 'BrightBurn' and 'Triple Frontier' highlight possible 2019 under-the-radar gems

2018 is just a few weeks from its conclusion, and I think we're all ready to put this one behind us. It's been a good and bad year for a number of reasons, but I'm just a little exhausted (if you haven't noticed much non-review content around here from me, that would be why). I'm in the middle of my expansive catch-up for North Carolina Film Critics Association voting, so I'm running through screeners left and right in my quest to see everything before the deadline. At this time of year, there's something comforting about thinking of all the blockbuster fun that awaits us in January, February, and beyond, once we move paced the serious mugging of the Oscar season into lighter territory. From a cinematic perspective, it's fun to turn the page at the end of the year and think about what lies ahead in the next 12 months. With the onslaught of Christmas releases, studios are beginning to release trailers for some of their 2019 titles. Let's break down a few today- first, the trailer for the James Gunn-produced BrightBurn!

This trailer has already been praised to the heavens, so let me add to the chorus of voices here. I knew nothing about BrightBurn before this trailer dropped, but the concept is so totally brilliant and clever that I imagine David Yarovesky's film will be something of a sensation in May. The trailer very obviously riffs on Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (and the Superman mythos as a whole), only to deliver something much, much scarier. BrightBurn is probably going to be a good piece of pulpy, schlocky fun, but it also got under my skin in a somewhat significant way? It looks like young Jackson A. Dunn gives an expertly unnerving performance as our Kal-El stand-in, and there's an enigmatic mystery at the heart of it all that looks pretty creepy. Plus, with Gunn involved, BrightBurn could also end up featuring a good bit of humor. Whatever the case may be, I'm there on opening day.

BrightBurn will open in theaters on May 24, 2019, opposite Disney's Aladdin and James Gray's Ad Astra.

Next, watch the trailer for Netflix and director J.C. Chandor's Triple Frontier!

I was a little surprised to see Netflix already kicking off the marketing campaign for Triple Frontier, if only because the studio held so many of its big-ticket releases for the end of 2018. And with a cast led by Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal, as well as Chandor's presence at the helm, this is absolutely one of the more high-profile films Netflix will release in 2019. The March release date indicates that we're not looking at a major Oscar contender, which is surprising given the pedigree of the talent involved. But taking into account the glut of Netflix titles at the end of the year and the failure of films like Widows and First Man, maybe we don't need to shove every big adult movie into the final four months of the year. Just maybe.

Anyways, this looks like a good bit of fun, though I'm still not quite sure if it's going to be your typical macho actioner or something a little deeper. It's been a hot minute since Chandor earned raves for A Most Violent Year, and if I remember correctly, Triple Frontier was stuck in development hell for quite some time. Will the film hit the right notes or is this another case of Netflix bankrolling a passion project gone astray? We'll find out in just a few months.
