'Zombieland 2' officially set for October 2019; Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin, and director Ruben Fleischer to return

Zombieland 2 is one of those movies that seemed like a pipe dream for a very long time. The 2009 cult classic became an unexpected hit, but it arrived at a time when many of the stars weren't really all that famous yet. Sure, Woody Harrelson was already a legend, but Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg were both a year away from Easy A and The Social Network, respectively. While Zombieland was successful and critically acclaimed, it didn't make the kind of franchise money you need to justify an immediate sequel. However, that hasn't stopped pretty much every single person involved with the film from talking about the possibility of a return to the satirical post-apocalyptic wasteland. Director Ruben Fleischer and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have moved on to many other projects, but after nearly a decade in the works, Zombieland 2 is finally happening.

In a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, Sony revealed that Zombieland 2 is officially happening- and everyone is returning for the ride. Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin, and Jesse Eisenberg will return, along with director Ruben Fleischer and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The film will shoot in January 2019 for a release date in October of the same year. In a statement to THR, Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch said: "This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time- and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail." Panitch added "These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing."

As noted by the above statement, Fleischer is behind the camera for Venom, which promises to be one of the most talked-about blockbusters of late 2018. In the time since the original Zombieland, Fleischer has also directed 30 Minutes or Less and Gangster Squad, two films that couldn't quite reach the popularity of his directorial debut. It'll be interesting to see if a return to the undead world he created sends Fleischer to the A-list of modern genre directors once again.

While the 2009 mini-classic ended on a pretty definitive note, I can't help but be just a little excited for Zombieland 2. With a bigger budget, the same team, and more bloody thrills, this sequel is just too good to pass up.

An official date has not been set as of yet, but Zombieland 2 will arrive in October 2019.
