Timothée Chalamet in final talks to star in Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune'

From the very moment that Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, Timothée Chalamet's path to international superstardom was set. While Guadagnino, screenwriter James Ivory, and stars Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg all earned praise for their contributions to the lush Italian romance, Chalamet was undeniably the breakout star. As Elio, Chalamet commanded the screen, crafting a complicated and powerful portrait of a young man in love and earning an Oscar nomination along the way. And did I forget to mention that he also had minor roles in Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird and Scott Cooper's Hostiles? 2017 was the year of Chalamet, but he's just getting started. He'll be back in the thick of the Oscar race this year with Felix Van Groeningen's Beautiful Boy, and he'll be starring in Netflix's The King and Gerwig's Little Women in the near future. But if you thought Chalamet already had a full schedule, it looks like he'll be adding another huge project to his upcoming slate.

According to Deadline, Timothée Chalamet is in final talks to join the cast of Denis Villeneuve's upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune. Chalamet will star as Paul Atreides, the hero of the classic series of sci-fi novels. If you're unfamiliar with the series like I am, Deadline has the details on the story- and it sounds bonkers. Set in the distant future on planets very different from our own, Dune follows Atreides, a nobleman from a royal family caught in a war over a coveted drug that can only be found in the dunes of the planet Arraxis. Atreides was played by Kyle MacLachlan in David Lynch's film, a notorious box office bomb in 1984. Alejandro Jodorowsky also tried and failed to adapt the novels, which resulted in the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune.

Villeneuve's take on Dune will be distributed by Legendary Pictures, who acquired the rights in 2016. Villeneuve has previously expressed his desire to make two Dune movies, but there has been no confirmation on that matter. According to Vulture's Kyle Buchanan, the film is aiming for a February 2019 production start.

Even as someone with zero connection to the Dune series, this is one of my most anticipated projects for the next few years. Chalamet became an instant favorite of mine after Call Me By Your Name, while Villeneuve has been one of the best directors in the game since Prisoners. The auteur has delved into the sci-fi genre on two previous occasions, earning a Best Picture nomination for Arrival and creating a masterful sequel with Blade Runner 2049. He should make as many sci-fi films as humanly possible. Simply put, the idea of Villeneuve teaming up with Chalamet for a big-budget extravaganza is beyond exciting.

Look for more on Dune as production approaches.
