Millie Bobby Brown faces off against iconic creatures in epic trailer for 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters'

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are building a cinematic universe of the most famous monsters of all time, but they're in no rush to cash in on Marvel's success. They're taking their sweet time with this series, creating movies that are undeniably distinct and original. In 2014, Gareth Edwards' grounded, violent Godzilla promised a new age of spectacular monster movies. Three years later, Jordan Vogt-Roberts introduced a fresh spin on King Kong with Skull Island, a crazy mash-up of monster smackdowns and Apocalypse Now imagery. But even with an end credits scene that teased the presence of Monarch and the existence of many other Kaiju, the long-awaited battle between Kong and Godzilla wasn't an imminent threat in 2017. In fact, it's still years away- Adam Wingard's franchise culmination won't arrive until May 2020. First, Krampus director Michael Dougherty will alter the course of monster movie history with Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a sequel that seems truly apocalyptic in nature. Moments ago, Warner Bros. released the first trailer at their Comic-Con panel- check it out below!

So Godzilla: King of the Monsters looks absolutely astonishing. To be fair, Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island also looked amazing when we first caught a glimpse of the footage. Warner Bros. is really good at cutting epic, awe-inspiring trailers for their big monster movies, and this may just be the best of the bunch. I was always excited for King of the Monsters for a number of reasons, but I never imagined it would be a blockbuster on this scale. It appears that the end of the world has arrived in the MonsterVerse, and that will certainly put Godzilla vs. Kong in an interesting situation. Assuming that we're following strict continuity here, is that anticipated face-off going to be set in a post-apocalyptic world? It very well could be.

Even as someone who has been mixed on Legendary's monster movies thus far (Godzilla is fine, Skull Island is fairly empty), I simply cannot wait for King of the Monsters. This looks like the monster movie to end all monster movies, and I have no idea how Adam Wingard is going to top this in 2020. I've been excited since the moment Warner Bros. hired Michael Dougherty, whose Krampus is the rare Christmas horror classic that I believe will endure for many years to come. From a sheer cinematic perspective, King of the Monsters looks like a staggering achievement, bathed in a mixture of steely blue hues and disastrous, ominous yellows and oranges. This is going to be a visual feast, and I love how Dougherty appears to be leaning into the mythological aspects of these characters. Also, the idea of Vera Farmiga playing a monster who believes she's a savior is brilliant, and it should make for an incredible villain.

Beyond Farmiga, let's talk about this cast. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Get Out's Bradley Whitford, O'Shea Jackson Jr., the return of Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe- this is a staggering ensemble of talent. Something about King of the Monsters feels truly special, and I can't wait to see it all unfold. This is flat-out one of my most anticipated movies of 2019. I look forward to see this trailer on the biggest screen possible in the coming weeks.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will hit theaters on May 31, 2019.
