Keri Russell in talks to join the cast of 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

While hardcore Star Wars fans and trolls alike may still spend their days debating the merits of Rian Johnson's "controversial" The Last Jedi, things are moving forward in a galaxy far, far away. With the disappointing release (speaking from a box office perspective, of course) of Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story behind them and no concrete plans for other adventures in the universe, the leaders at Lucasfilm have the opportunity to put all their time and energy into Episode IX. Set to be directed by franchise favorite J.J. Abrams (he was at the helm for The Force Awakens), the ninth installment in the iconic series will round out the saga of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), hopefully sending the universe in a bold new direction along the way.

With filming set to begin soon for the film's December 2019 release, Abrams and Lucasfilm have started rounding out the cast for this new chapter. Earlier today, Variety's Justin Kroll revealed that Keri Russell, a frequent Abrams collaborator and the star of FX's acclaimed The Americans, is in talks to join the talented cast of Episode IX in an unspecified role. Details on the character are obviously scarce, but the report notes that the part requires "action-heavy fight scenes." Speculation online about the nature of Russell's role is already rampant, with theories proposing everything from Rey's mother (no) to a member of the Knights of Ren. Variety also revealed that Abrams will cast two additional actors before the end of the month, so it looks like we'll be receiving more exciting news on the Star Wars front in the near future.

Look, the core of this new trilogy has already been firmly established. With Rey and Kylo as the force-wielding foes and Finn (John Boyega), Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) as the leaders of the Resistance, there isn't much room for a new character to steal the spotlight. But as proven by Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro, a talented actor like Russell can add so much to a big franchise movie like this, even in a minor role. Since the nature of the character is unknown, it's hard to make much of a judgment on how Russell will fit into the Episode IX equation. However, I'm fully certain that Russell will knock it out of the park no matter whether her character is a hero, a villain, or, God forbid, Rey's mother.

Star Wars: Episode IX will arrive on December 20, 2019.
