Experience the lighter side of DC in the teaser trailer for 'Shazam!'

After the disastrous performance of Justice League with hardcore fans, critics, and general audiences alike, the DC Films branch of Warner Bros. is in desperate need of a reboot. Thankfully for us, the executives are hitting the "Reset" button in just a few months, kicking the dark 'n' gritty style of Zack Snyder to the curb in favor of more colorful, light-hearted fare that feels similar to the work of Marvel Studios. While Patty Jenkins' enormously popular Wonder Woman served as a spectacular preview of what DC will become, James Wan's Aquaman will officially kick-start the new era of The Worlds of DC in December (more on that in a bit), followed shortly by the first big-screen take on Shazam! With Annabelle: Creation and Lights Out director David F. Sandberg at the helm, the cinematic introduction of Billy Batson is sure to generate a lot of buzz next year. Moments ago at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. released a surprisingly lengthy teaser trailer for the April release. Watch it below!

Look, I'm sure a large group of DC fans will be upset that the studio is shifting away from the Snyder tone, but I'm all for it. What we're seeing with this teaser trailer is the introduction of a bold new course correction for what is now being called The Worlds of DC (formerly DC Universe), the establishment of a new look and feel that purposefully avoids everything that came before. I know we're still getting Suicide Squad spin-offs and the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie, but if Warner Bros. ever gets around to making another Justice League movie, this is going to be the tone. And of course, I love that it's being set up from the very start, instead of through extensive rewrites and reshoots. Shazam! looks like a silly superhero blast, and I'm incredibly excited.

I think it's brilliant to add a little touch of camp to DC, something the previous movies have been sorely lacking. Even the terrific Wonder Woman avoided much overt goofiness, adding plenty of humor without injecting any cartoonish mayhem (the sequel may be going down a different course). Shazam! seems bright and eye-popping and deeply wacky, featuring a wizard, some crazy sight gags, and a whole lot of colorful fun. Naturally, some of it looks to be pushing the line between silliness and stupidity, specifically the dancing and the lengthy power test. But Zachary Levi looks like a great fit for the role, and I'm digging his chemistry with IT star Jack Dylan Grazer.

We're still almost a year from the release of Shazam!, but this trailer did its job. I'm in- this looks like a great time at the theater.

Shazam! opens in theaters on April 5, 2019.
