Daily Movie News: Marc Maron in talks for Joker movie, Fantastic Fest sets 'Apostle' and 'Overlord' for world premieres, and Jordan Peele's 'Us' announces full cast

It's been a somewhat busy day for movie news, mostly involving Hangover director Todd Phillips' upcoming Joker project. Led by nominee Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime, the dark and presumably R-rated standalone picture has been assembling quite an all-star cast. Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz and cinematic icon Robert De Niro joined the ensemble in recent days, followed shortly by The Tale's Frances Conroy. Earlier today, Variety revealed that Marc Maron, host of the WTF Podcast and star of Netflix's GLOW, is in talks to join the cast of the Joker film. Maron will play an agent on the De Niro-hosted talk show, which apparently has a major impact on the Joker's rise to criminal infamy.

In addition to Maron, Bryan Callen has also joined the cast of film (via Heroic Hollywood), set to play an aging stripper in a limited role. Callen recently appeared in The Goldbergs and Ride Along, but he's perhaps best known for a role in Phillips' original Hangover movie.

Joker will arrive in theaters on October 4, 2019.

In other news, Austin's Fantastic Fest revealed its initial wave of titles today, led by two very high-profile world premieres.

Apostle, Gareth Evans' long-awaited follow-up to The Raid 2, will make its world premiere at the genre festival, which runs from September 20-27. The film follows a man searching for his sister in a remote religious cult, fighting a charming preacher along the way. The cast includes Dan Stevens, Sing Street's Lucy Boynton, and Michael Sheen. The Netflix-backed project will arrive on the streaming service on October 12.

Also heading to Austin is Julius Avery's Overlord, which was once rumored to be the next chapter in J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield series. Instead, it appears that this is just your average zombie Nazi movie. With Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine, Pilou Asbaek, and John Magaro leading the cast, Overlord will arrive on November 9.

In terms of other major titles debuting at Fantastic Fest, it appears that Lee Chang-dong's Cannes hit Burning, Daniel Goldhaber's acclaimed Cam, and Jim Hosking's An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn will all be making the trip. Look for more on Fantastic Fest as additional titles are announced.

Finally, director Jordan Peele began production today on Us, his follow-up to the Oscar-winning smash hit Get Out. Peele also wrote the script for Us, which will be another social thriller in the vein of his debut feature.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, Black Panther's Winston Duke, The Handmaid's Tale's Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker were previously revealed to be leading the film's cast, but Peele has filled out additional roles for the project. Aquaman's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Titans star Anna Diop, The Lion King actress Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, newcomer Madison Curry, and Cali and Noelle Sheldon have joined the ensemble.

Per Deadline, Us will shoot entirely in California, with sections shot on the Universal backlot. Peele's Monkeypaw Productions and Jason Blum's Blumhouse will back the project. Us will debut on March 15, 2019.
