Cate Shortland to direct Marvel’s upcoming ‘Black Widow’ solo film

With last weekend’s release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Marvel Studios has now made 20 movies. In this grand experiment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve been introduced to dozens, maybe even hundreds of characters. Many have remained supporting players in the franchises of more famous superheroes, such as Captain America, Iron Man, and Spider-Man. At the same time, there’s no denying that Marvel has made solo outings for some pretty obscure comic book characters. Remember- this is the studio that turned films about Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy into global smash hits, creating icons in the process. So if we’re being honest, Marvel’s failure to make a good Black Widow standalone movie is borderline inexcusable. Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of Natasha Romanoff has increased in popularity since her first appearance in 2010’s Iron Man 2, to the point that the actress is asked about a possible solo movie with the arrival of every new press tour. Marvel honcho Kevin Feige and Johansson have previously promised a new adventure for Widow, and it looks like that promise is finally coming to fruition.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Cate Shortland has signed on to direct the untitled Black Widow spin-off, ending an epic search that reportedly saw Marvel meet with over 70 directors. Per THR, Johansson pushed for Shortland as the directorial hunt reached its end, as the studio also looked at Belle director Amma Asante, Novitiate's Maggie Betts, and Melanie Laurent. Black Widow will take place before the events of the first Avengers film, which should present something of an interesting challenge for Shortland and the studio. The Australian filmmaker is best known for Lore and Berlin Syndrome, two small-scale indies that earned widespread critical acclaim.

As someone who is unfamiliar with Shortland's work, I feel unqualified to comment on the hiring. But I'm ecstatic that Marvel is finally making a Widow film, which is something that should have happened a long time ago. I wish we were getting a violent and R-rated spy version of Romanoff's story, but I'll settle for any big-budget action flick with Johansson. Look for more on Black Widow after Avengers 4 hits theaters in May 2019.
