Weekend Box Office: 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' opens strong with $150 million, while 'Incredibles 2' drops to $80.9 million

We still have July and August left to go, but it appears that the last of this summer's mega blockbusters opened this weekend, as Universal's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom roared into theaters. While titles like Ant-Man and the Wasp and Mission: Impossible- Fallout could overperform, openings in the range of $120 million+ seem unlikely. Fallen Kingdom, the J.A. Bayona-directed sequel to the megahit reboot, grossed $150 million this weekend, a major drop-off from its predecessor but a very solid opening in its own right. 2015's Jurassic World opened with a staggering $208.8 million, which was the biggest opening in history at the time. It also did monster business overseas, grossing a combined total of $525.5 million. Fallen Kingdom had no chance to match those numbers, but the team at Universal opted for a much different release strategy for this follow-up.

With the FIFA World Cup capturing the attention of much of the world, Universal released Fallen Kingdom in many international territories earlier this month, where it has captured $561.5 million thus far. Its total worldwide gross stands at $711.5 million, which makes it the biggest movie of the year that doesn't feature a Marvel Studios character. It will almost surely end up as the third film of the year to reach $1 billion worldwide.

In the U.S., Fallen Kingdom received an "A-" CinemaScore, indicating solid word-of-mouth. Critics savaged the sequel, which culminated in a score of 51 on Metacritic and 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film still netted the fourth-biggest opening of the year, below only Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and Incredibles 2. This means that 6 of the top 20 openings of all time have occurred in either 2017 or 2018, inflation notwithstanding. That's pretty impressive. Fallen Kingdom should hold fairly well against Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Uncle Drew next weekend, which would put it in prime position to finish upwards of $400 million. Not a bad result for a film with mixed reviews and a messy marketing campaign.

Disney/Pixar's Incredibles 2 snagged another $80.9 million, dropping 55.7% in its second weekend. The long-awaited sequel has now made $350.3 million in the US alone. It will surely end up being the biggest animated film of all time, but only time will tell when it comes to the worldwide game. The Brad Bird-directed superhero flick has made $134.7 million overseas, though it still hasn't opened in many territories due to the World Cup. A weak opening in China does not foreshadow a strong result, but a finish around $550 million in America and decent numbers internationally would still get the film to the magic $1 billion mark.

In other box office news, Ocean's 8 finished in third place with $11.6 million, becoming the 12th film in 2018 to make over $100 million in the US. Deadpool 2 earned $5.2 million to cross the $300 million mark, with a current gross of $304.1 million. Solo: A Star Wars Story is still a bomb, but hey, at least it made it to $202.1 million. And Focus Features' Won't You Be My Neighbor? did fairly well in its expansion, grossing $1.875 million in only 348 theaters.
