Timothée Chalamet is a 'Beautiful Boy' in first trailer for addiction drama

Even if the film ended up only making $18 million in the US, Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name will forever be known as the movie that turned Timothée Chalamet into a global star. It also helps when you appear in small roles in films like Lady Bird, Interstellar, and Hostiles, but the lush Italian romance really was the movie that announced Chalamet as a major talent. The 22-year-old actor earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Elio, a young man grappling with his sexuality over the course of a gorgeous European summer. Chalamet ultimately lost out on the Oscar to Darkest Hour's Gary Oldman, but he certainly won't be a one-hit wonder. The budding superstar will be back in the thick of the race in 2018-19 with Beautiful Boy, a drug addiction drama that also stars Steve Carell, Maura Tierney, and Amy Ryan. Seemingly set for a bow on the festival circuit, Amazon Studios released the first trailer for the potential Oscar player earlier today. Check it out below!

The buzz on Beautiful Boy has been all over the map for the past several months, but in my book, this really does look quite spectacular. The one consistent industry rumor is that Timothée Chalamet is utterly fantastic in this movie, and this trailer puts his talents on full display. Chalamet has such incredible emotional depth as an actor, equipped with an amazing range and an unmistakable screen presence. Playing a young man suffering from meth addiction is quite a turn for him, and yet I have no doubt that he'll pull it off. It's still way too early to be making Oscar predictions, but I would put money on Chalamet being back in the Best Actor race this year.

The film itself, which arrives courtesy of director Felix van Groeningen, actually looks quite gorgeous as well. There's a washed out simplicity to the imagery, which feels like a portrait of childhood nostalgia gone wrong. While Beautiful Boy appears to be dabbling in some familiar Oscar territory, this looks like a stark, uncompromising drama. And even if it ends up being the Timothée Chalamet show, I'm glad to see Steve Carell in another dramatic role. He seems to be doing the understated thing he did in Last Flag Flying once again, but he's countering it with a little bit of dramatic passion and flair. Since many of his dramatic turns have been sullen and dark, it'll be fascinating to see him experiment with something more intense. I don't know if I buy it from the trailer, but this film looks so powerful and emotional that I can't wait to find out more for myself.

Beautiful Boy will hit theaters on October 12, presumably in limited release.
