Terrifying trailer for Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria' teases a new version of the iconic classic

Luca Guadagnino may have gained some notice on the festival circuit for I Am Love and A Bigger Splash, but his big breakout hit finally arrived last year in the form of Call Me By Your Name. From its humble origins at Sundance, his lush and heartbreaking adaptation of André Aciman's romance novel quickly became a sensation, earning multiple Oscar nominations and turning Timothée Chalamet into a global star. Guadagnino also found himself elevated to the upper echelon of modern day auteurs, with fans around the world waiting anxiously for his next project. Luckily for us, that next project could not be more enticing. Guadagnino had already shot his remake of Suspiria by the time Call Me By Your Name was earning accolades, but after a very long and frustrating wait, the director's first foray into horror is finally hitting theaters this year. Earlier this morning, Amazon Studios released the teaser trailer for the film- check it out below if you dare!

Call Me By Your Name was one of my favorite films of 2017. Suspiria is one of the few horror movies that completely blew me away on my first viewing. Could I possibly be more excited for this film?

Remakes typically earn a good deal of skepticism, and that's because they're rarely good or necessary in any way. Dario Argento's Suspiria is a horror classic and a bona fide masterpiece, so that sense of doubt should be amplified. In theory, this movie should be untouchable. But when you have a director like Guadagnino at the helm, things get a little more intriguing. In fact, it feels like any skepticism surrounding this remake (or re-imagining, if you believe Guadagnino) has completely and totally evaporated. Horror fans are in, and judging by this brief teaser, there's a very good reason for that.

As previously teased by the director himself, this version of Suspiria does not look or sound anything like its predecessor. There are no neon lights to be found, nor is that harrowing Goblin score lurking in the background. This looks unmistakably like a Guadagnino film, except one with instruments of torture and witches instead of sandy beaches and Italian wine. The brief sample of the score by Thom Yorke is unsettling, and it looks like cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (who also shot Call Me) has delivered a film with a different, but equally impressive look and feel. The images here are so perfectly composed that it's chilling, and I'm excited to see Guadagnino bring his own visual stamp to the horror genre. There's also a bit of a Bigger Splash reunion going on here, as Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton are leading the cast. And that's only #543 on the list of "Reasons to be Excited for Suspiria."

Basically, this is one of my most anticipated movies of the fall, without question. If I do make the trek up to Toronto this year, I can only hope that Guadagnino's film will be there. At this point, it seems like a Venice premiere is in the cards, but we'll find out in a few short months.

Suspiria arrives on November 2.
