Saoirse Ronan, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet set to star in Greta Gerwig's 'Little Women'

Greta Gerwig made her name on the indie scene throughout the 2010s in a major way, writing scripts for movies like Frances Ha and Mistress America and working with acclaimed filmmakers such as Mike Mills, Wes Anderson, and Noah Baumbach. But Gerwig went from indie darling to Hollywood superstar in 2017 with Lady Bird, her acclaimed semi-autobiographical directorial debut. Led by the dynamic duo of Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird became something of a sensation, earning 5 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director. Word on Gerwig's next project has been nearly silent for the past few months, but news has finally broken on how the writer/director will follow up her incredible debut.

According to Variety, Gerwig will be stepping behind the camera for an adaptation of Little Women, the classic Louisa May Alcott novel. The film is set up at Columbia Pictures, and it sounds like Gerwig will be assembling a hell of a cast for this new take on the classic story. After initially being brought in for a re-write, Gerwig has courted a murderer's row of A-list talent, led by Lady Bird co-stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet, Oscar winner Emma Stone, Lady Macbeth's Florence Pugh, and Hollywood icon Meryl Streep. Should this all come to fruition, Variety is certain that producers Amy Pascal, Denise Di Novi, and Robin Swicord will put the film on the fast track.

This is maybe the most Oscar-friendly cast in recent memory, with many players who will likely find themselves back in the race in the fall. Chalamet will appear in Felix Van Groeningen's Beautiful Boy, Ronan will star in Mary Queen of Scots, and Stone has a lead role in Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite. Plus, Streep is practically synonymous with the awards race. Long story short, Gerwig's take on this story is almost certainly an awards contender.

I read Little Women years ago, and I wasn't exactly clamoring for a new adaptation. But when you throw in Gerwig and this absolutely stacked ensemble, this is undoubtedly one of my most anticipated films of 2019, presuming that Sony is able to get the ball rolling by then. Look for more on Little Women as this story develops.
