Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' adds Damian Lewis, Dakota Fanning, Emile Hirsch, and many more to all-star ensemble

Quentin Tarantino is no stranger to all-star casts and marathon-length stories. In fact, almost all of his movies involve a massive ensemble filled to the brim with movie stars and character actors alike. And if you count Kill Bill as one long movie, Tarantino has only made one movie under two hours (2007's Death Proof) since the relatively short Reservoir Dogs debuted in the early 1990s. But even by Tarantino standards, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is shaping up to be quite possibly his biggest endeavor yet. It's weird to speculate about the runtime of a movie that hasn't even gone into production yet, but I seriously cannot imagine a world where this movie isn't three hours long. The director's next project, a Pulp Fiction-like portrait of Los Angeles in 1969, has already attracted plenty of superstar talent. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Burt Reynolds, Kurt Russell, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, and Timothy Olyphant will all star in the film, which will reportedly tackle the Manson Family Murders. But if you thought casting was complete....well, Tarantino has a few more surprises in store.

Yesterday, Deadline revealed that several additional actors have joined Tarantino's next film. The list includes Damian Lewis, Dakota Fanning, Luke Perry, Emile Hirsch, Clifton Collins Jr., Nicholas Hammond, and Keith Jefferson. In addition to this laundry list of names, we also received a bit of information on who they'll each be playing. Lewis will be tackling the role of Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, with Collider's Jeff Sneider adding that Tarantino is also looking to cast actors for Bruce Lee and Manson himself. Fanning will play Manson disciple Squeaky Fromme, Perry is playing Scotty Lancer, Collins Jr. will tackle the role of Ernesto the Mexican Vaquero, and Hammond will star as actor/director Sam Wanamaker. Hirsch is set to play Jay Sebring, a hairstylist killed in the Tate murders, while Jefferson will star as a character named Land Pirate Keith.

All of this sounds weird and wacky and wonderful, and I obviously can't wait to hear more. Tarantino is one of the greatest filmmakers alive today, and if his plan to quit after two more movies really does come to fruition, it sounds like he'll be going out with a bang. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood looks epic, expansive, and very Tarantino, and I'm thrilled by these additions to the ensemble (even if I'm unfamiliar with some of the actors). Look for more as the film nears production.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will debut on August 9, 2019.
