Oscar buzz is in the air in first trailer for Bradley Cooper's 'A Star Is Born'

The latest remake of A Star Is Born has been in the works for years, and it's one of those projects that I never expected much from at all. After detours with Clint Eastwood, Beyonce, and many others, the movie eventually fell into the hands of Bradley Cooper, who is making his directorial debut and starring alongside pop star Lady Gaga. That's certainly an interesting idea, but I still had little interest initially. However, the buzz on A Star Is Born has really been heating up recently. Per IMDb, the film has been completed for almost a year now, which explains why so many people in Hollywood have seen it. Industry icons like Robert De Niro and Sean Penn have heaped overwhelming praise on the actor's debut behind the camera, prompting a good deal of Oscar buzz. Audiences at CinemaCon went crazy for the trailer, which intensified the chatter around the film to deafening levels. After building the buzz for months, Warner Bros. finally released the first trailer for A Star Is Born yesterday. Watch it below!

This trailer got a massive reception online when it debuted, with many echoing the positive sentiments of  CinemaCon attendees. I feel like a downer by saying that I think the film looks solid and engrossing, even if I'm not convinced of its surefire masterpiece status yet. You never really know what you're going to get when it comes to famous actors stepping behind the camera, but it looks like Cooper is rather accomplished in the directing department already. This new version of A Star Is Born seems to be going for a raw, gritty approach, tackling the darker side of fame within the confines of a tale of superstardom. There were many comparisons being discussed when the trailer arrived yesterday, but I was most reminded of John Carney's Begin Again, another strong look at a struggling character in the modern music business. As a fan of Carney's film, that's definitely a compliment.

While Lady Gaga has appeared in small roles in films like Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Machete Kills, this is her first big, intense movie role. It looks like she'll do a tremendous job, which shouldn't be much of a surprise considering that she's been a performer for years. Cooper seems to be in fine form here as well, and the inclusion of supporting players like Dave Chappelle and Sam Elliott is an attention-grabber. I wasn't blown away by this first look, but there's enough here to guarantee that I'll be there on opening weekend. And if it gets a good reception at the fall festivals, then all bets are off.

A Star Is Born arrives in theaters on October 5.
