Must-Watch: Trailer for Drew Goddard's star-studded 'Bad Times at the El Royale' is bloody, wild, and flat-out awesome

While Drew Goddard doesn't have many credits to his name, the young writer/director has been a vital part of some hugely influential pop culture touchstones. Goddard earned an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for The Martian, the Matt Damon-led sci-fi movie that became a mini-sensation in late 2015. He also directed the subversive The Cabin in the Woods, which earned instant cult classic after several release delays. And beyond those two projects, Goddard has been a producer on the last two Cloverfield movies and TV shows such as The Good Place and Daredevil. Oh, and he's set to direct the X-Force movie in a few years. Simply put, Goddard is a directorial superstar in the making. But first, the filmmaker will take a detour to a world of murder and madness at the El Royale hotel. Goddard's second feature, Bad Times at the El Royale, has been shrouded in secrecy since it was first announced. But with a rising talent behind the camera and an all-star cast, this has been on my radar for months now. Yesterday, 20th Century Fox released the first trailer for the film. This one is going to be special- watch the first look below!

I don't have a single bad thing to say about this trailer. I am unreasonably excited for Bad Times at the El Royale, which looks to be so up my alley that it's not even funny. The film seems like a blend of Matthew Vaughn and Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright and so many more distinct cinematic voices, all to create something that feels unique to Goddard himself. From the snowy peaks of the West Coast to the kitschy trappings of the hotel itself, every frame in this first look is stylish and gorgeous. After the relatively small-scale Cabin in the Woods, this seems like a major visual step up for Goddard, who could be jumping into the big leagues with this one.

And then there's the cast, which is a spectacular ensemble on just about every level. Chris Hemsworth is playing a nefarious and shirtless cult leader, in what seems to be a perfect subversion of his Thor persona. Jon Hamm is utilizing this brilliant Southern accent, Jeff Bridges is playing a bank robber posing as a priest, and Dakota Johnson looks intimidating in the most subtle way possible. Oh, and how could I forget about Parks and Rec's Nick Offerman in a mystery role, potentially as one of the leaders of the hotel management. Goddard seems to be revisiting some Cabin in the Woods-esque territory in this one, but I have no doubt that he has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Beyond that, this is just a masterfully cut trailer. The opening 30 seconds are wickedly cool and eye-catching, all before the brutal murder at the halfway mark draws you in even further. I love the use of both the regular version and the slowed-down cover of a song, subverting a trailer trope that we've seen used time and time again. At this point, I'm just gushing for no good reason- Bad Times at the El Royale is going to be an absolute blast. It looks like a crazy, twisty, bloody, and ingenious crime movie, and I am so in. Give this movie to me right now.

Unfortunately, Bad Times at the El Royale won't hit theaters until October 5. That's four months too long. I need it now.
