Meet the iconic flying elephant in colorful teaser trailer for Tim Burton's 'Dumbo'

It's not enough for Disney to have Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, and their own powerhouse animation studio. No, the Mouse House also feels the need to remake every single one of their animated movies and make a billion dollars each time. We've already seen plenty of these movies arrive in theaters, take home wheelbarrows full of cash, and leave little to no cultural impact. For Disney, the emphasis in that equation is on the cash, and as long as they keep making money, they'll be churning out these movies until the end of time. I'm not saying that they're all bad- in fact, I quite liked last year's Beauty and the Beast. But the sheer volume is quickly growing exhausting, and I worry that this business model is setting the tone for the rest of Hollywood. Anyways, Disney released the first trailer for Tim Burton's Dumbo, a remake of the 1941 classic, earlier this morning. Watch the brief teaser trailer below!

This teaser has already drawn comparisons to Hugh Jackman's breakout musical The Greatest Showman, which is rather amusing since it seems like the two films have little in common. Well, besides the circus part. I know Dumbo was in production well before that show-stopping musical became a hit, but I think it'd be really funny if the lesson Hollywood learned from Showman was "people want more circus movies."

Okay, moving on. Dumbo looks.....fine, I suppose? On paper, there are a ton of reasons to not be excited. The film is written by Ehren Kruger, who penned three of the four Transformers sequels. It's also directed by Tim Burton, who has proven to be more adept on a small scale than on a big one at this stage in his career (think Big Eyes vs. Alice in Wonderland). And it also appears to be sticking with the Disney aesthetic that has produced mixed results in the past, perhaps best exemplified by the drab and obviously digitized visuals of Oz, The Great and Powerful and the aforementioned Alice.

But it isn't all bad. The cast, led by Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Green, Alan Arkin, and Danny DeVito, is unreasonably stacked for a movie about a flying elephant. Even with that plastic Disney aesthetic, the color palette is solid and the circus atmosphere looks kinda fun. And yeah, the elephant is very cute. So they've got that going for them.

Overall, it's just too early to tell. This movie is still nearly a year away, and Burton probably doesn't have too much to show off at this point. Dumbo could be a surprise, or it could be another one of Disney's ill-advised remakes. We'll have to wait and see.

Dumbo arrives in theaters on March 29, 2019.
